Hmmm 1.9 jtdm 150bhp

As the title,

Has anyone any experience with remapping this engine.

Pro's & Con's, was it worthwhile, mpg increase, that sort of thing.

Is it a strong engine to work on?? I'm coming to my first Alfa from a TypeR civic where the engine was never an issue. Not saying that the Alfa will be, just that I don't know much about them.

Got mine (GT with Q2) done by Gus at Alfatune on 16k miles, now on 80k 3 years later and no issues (naturally having said this the turbo will go tomorrow!), i asked for economy over power (though it still increased power) due to high mileage and mainly motorways, averages 55mpg, revs slip if i put my foot down from the off until it picks up - 4th and 5th gear great tho.

Like anything in life, if you max her out then expect it to go pop sooner.

The engine is quite nice to work on (having rebuilt my JTD mjet) , cam belt is quite easy to do along with the aux belt.
They can make 200hp+ without any high spec rebuilds, and still return 50+mpg easily.

The major thing to watch out for is an overdue cam belt change, they seem to fail way before the due date. Change along with the water pump, as the bearings in the pump are rubbish and wear very quickly and can seize leading to belt failure.

Mine is the 140ps spec (M-Jet before JTDm) my average mpg since new MAF and resetting my ecu is 63mpg (~500+miles), failing MAF causes all sorts of wierd engine running, no power under 2krpm, smokey on WOT..

EGR valve is a common problem (recirculates exhaust gas ro reduce NOx emissions) This valve soots up and jams part open causing poor running ect, but easy diy dissassemble and clean.

So far I love the JTD 16v engine. I want one for my kitcar!

I remapped mine 2.5 years ago at 40,000miles and went from 150bhp -> 185bhp, 145ftlbs -> 185ftlbs. I've now done 90,000miles. Same clutch, no slippage.

Economy doesn't seem to have suffered (45mpg) but the power increase is very welcome and gets used virtually all the time. She pulls like a train all the way from below 2Krpm to 4.5Krpm.

The engine and gearbox can take it, no problem. The only note of caution would be that the diff. may be a weak spot if you drive hard out of corners (and that's hard to resist).

This is solved by fitting a Q2 diff, but they're not as cheap as they used to be. I'd factor this in if you're going for a remap.

You can't fit a Q2 diff to the 159 AFAIK. It has an electronic version.

OP - do a bit of a search, there are lots of people who have mapped this engine with good power and economy double-wins. It should reassure you.

Oops, didn't notice it was for a 159. Yes, different gearbox to mine. I think it's still possible to fit a Q2 with a modification though?

I know the Giulietta has an electronic 'LSD' but I didn't know the 159 does?

The only way to accurately measure your mpg is to brim your tank when you fill, drive in your normal way for most of that tank, refill to the brim and log your mileage on both occasions - then do the maths, ie total miles on that 'trip' divided by the amount of gallons used (gallons = 0.22 x litres...I think...)

trip computer tells 63mpg, refills say about 59 , so fairly close..
