Tightening a crank bolt???

Anyone done this? I am assuming yes considering how many have done bottom end rebuilds. How did you do it? I am assuming the best way (with the engine in) is to put the car on the ground, jack up drivers side, put it into gear, step on brakes and then put some torque into it with a grolly bar / impact gun?

Is there a better / different way?

Cheers
Stan

I had the car on a lift so both wheels supported... but yes, the big bar sounds about right...

Iain, the gearbox is on and its in the car so couldnt do that.

We did it anyway. Got about 4 extensions from the bolt, sticking out and rested on a trolley jack which had been raised to the same height to keep it level. Then we had a grolley bar with a piece of scaffolding on the end of it, jobs a good un!!!!

Problem is, the crank seal blew when we fired the engine up so its got to come off again!!! Gutted to say the least!!!!
