Diesel Engine Noise

... What is it that makes the classic diesel engine noise ? No, this is a serious question, not a micky-take!

I think my 159 JTDm is quite refined for a diesel, but the note it makes changes depending on throttle input obviously. But it also changes with no change in throttle input. Often very subdued and smooth, but occasionally you get that clatter-clatter sound for no apparent reason.

So what exactly is it that makes a diesel engine sound the way it does ?
