2.4ltr JTD..what do I need to know

Hi all,

just thinking about buying another alfa... this one comes with a 2.4 JTD. Not an engine I am familiar with... what do I need to know?

when should cam belt be done... any weaknesses? I've had twinneys/V6's and a 1.9JTD... how will it compare?

any past experiences will be great!!

Manythanks'

The official cambelt interval is 72k, however I've been recommended to change it every 60k, the 2.4 JTDs (I've heard anyway) are pretty bullet proof as long as you make sure they've got oil in!!!!

They also remap pretty well, just had my 150bhp 2.4 JTD remapped to 209BHP ... (going to be saving up for an uprated clutch which I'm sure will go soon!!!!)

Re: 2.4ltr JTD..what do I need to know

I am not an expert on the 2.4 diesel, but I am pretty sure they have a dual mass flywheel. If the clutch needs changing then there is a chance that this may also need changing. And it is very expensive.

Basically the composite material breaks up. I am pretty sure that driving the car with a slipping clutch makes this more likely due to the heat generated.

I am not sure exactly how much it costs but it in the several hundreds of ££'s on top of the clutch change.

The 1.9 Diesel also has one IIRC.

The 2.4 is widely regarded as one of the best diesels on the market.

Re: 2.4ltr JTD..what do I need to know

2.4 is great, I have 169k on the clock.

The rest of the car is typical 156!

Standard clutch can do 160k, mine did!

Can map with a few small hardware mods to just over 200bhp from a 10valve, rolling road figures, it needs 295lb/ft torque at the wheels above 2700rpm to acheive this, what happens below will just shred the clutch and shatter the gearbox if its too high.

With 2 bar boost it is worth revving to 4500 in the higher gears, and tuned will do just over 135mph, past this you are out of revs.

Weak points are really poor intake, measly 2.5bar map sensor(1.5boost) and badly placed intercooler.

Re: 2.4ltr JTD..what do I need to know

So how does it compare with a Twinny ... it's heavy, about 130kg heavier all at the front and boy can you feel it, I've uprated my shocks/dampers to Koni FSD and Eibach Pro kit springs on my JTD and my twinny still felt more lively ... even though the JTD now handles better if that makes any sense?

EDIT, my cars were 156's ...

Chris, anything over 200bhp and these things are as quick to a 100mph as a V6 2.5. (sub 19secs and around 8secs to 60mph)
It should eat a twinny!!

There is no doubt about it, the JTD is definitely quicker than the twinny in a straight line, and probably also round the corners with the Koni's I've had fitted ... it just doesn't feel as good to drive, not as lively ...

Here is the big question...

How does the fuel consumption compare between the two?

Re: 2.4ltr JTD..what do I need to know

I do alot of motorway driving ... I used to get about 25mpg out of the twinny, with some very sensible driving I could get it up to 35mpg ... with the JTD I get 45mpg (I usually cruise at about 90-95mph) ... with granny driving I once got 61.4mpg on the 50 mile drive back from work (won't be doing that again, it bored me to tears!!!)
