I need help - loud engine knocking

Hello everyone. This morning my 2.0 TS Spider developed a very loud knocking noise very rapidly. This happened in about 200m. I stopped as soon as I heard it and didn't ride it any more. The car starts, idles well, there's not any oil leak, oil level is fine. There's this really loud tapping, knocking sound that gets worst when reving.
Any idea what this might be?

Sounds like you have lost a shell from your engine crank

If a shell has gone it can be pretty terminal I am afraid....probably better getting a recon lump in there....

But you need to get the problam diagnosed first...

Some knocking noises have been found to be the exhaust shield rattling.

Hello all, I work with peter who has this problem with his alfa,

I have had a quick listen, the noise sounds like a very noisy lifter that isn't pumped with oil, rap a knuckle on the table a few times a second, thats what it sounds like.

It is rev dependant. The engine itself idles and revs okay, just it has this noise.
I am thinking its more valvetrain that bottom end as it seems to be slower than engine speed.

Either way he does need to get it to a garage, are there any good dealers or independant alfa specialists in Hampshire ?

Sounding more like the big end shell then wouldn't you say??

Yep, sounds like the bottom end is screwed I'm afraid.

I so much wished for your guys to be wrong! Unfortunately you were right: a specialist from a "Nationwide Autocentre" told me that the big end is gone. I am gutted, really!
After reading some threads on the forum I guess my best choice is a recon engine, is it? Do you know anyone that would be trustworthy, offer long warranty? I am located in Hampshire.
