No, that recommendation was for the V6 which needs a GL4 spec.
The TS/JTS needs a GL5 spec. Redline 75W90NS would be the recommendation for that.

You remove the gearbox drain plug!
Make sure you can remove the fill plug first though...

Affraid not, no GL5 allowed in gearboxes, only diffs.. The additives in GL5 are not compatible with the syncros used in gearboxes.
looking at the recommended oil for my 2.0 TS right now, and it states:
2 liters Tutela ZC80/S API-GL4

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Where are you getting that info from and for what car?
The 156 TS is spec'd with 75w90 GL5 Synthetic gear oil.

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
The Alfa recomendation for a 156/147/GT TS/JTS is:
Tutela ZC 75 Synth
Which is a GL5 spec Synthetic gear oil
Originally it was 75W90 but a couple of years ago became 75W80
So Redline 75W90NS is perfect.

MT90 fine for the gearbox, or the MTL as ive mentioned above.
They are both GL4 and that is the important thing.

Hi Guy,

Indeed, you can also use a GL4/5 oil too.

I wonder why expensive companies like Silkolene and Castrol don't provide important information such as TBN and HTHS.

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Like this you mean?
The higher the viscosity the higher the number should be, ie 15w-50 should be higher than 10w-40 etc.
Some of this may be out of date so E&OE
Silkolene PRO S 5w-40
HTHS 4.07
Motul 300V 5w-40
HTHS 4.51
Silkolene PRO S 10w-50
HTHS 5.11
Motul 300V 10w-40
HTHS 4.19
Silkolene PRO R 15w-50
HTHS 5.23
Motul 300V 15w-50
HTHS 5.33
Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w-50
HTHS 5.11
Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60
HTHS 3.70

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
This info is hard to come by as manufacturers are reluctant to divulge it as it gives too much away about the quality.
To meet ACEA A3 it needs to be a minimum of 3.0

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Oilman,
thanks a lot. This is excellent information!!!
Browsing on the datasheets i see that the Motul 300V 15W50 is close to 10W with 120something cst at 40degrees.
Do you think it is suitable for the 3.2V6?
To put it in a different prospective, if you had a GTA whic oil would you use bearing in mind that castrol or selenia's product don't convince me.

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Based on the shear characteristics (quality) of Selenia or Edge Sport 10w-60 I would certainly favour a decent shear stable 15w-50 especially after 3000 miles of hard driving!
The likes of Motul 300V 15w-50 or Silkolene Pro R 15w-50 should stay in grade for far longer as they are proper pao/ester synthetics
Cheers
Simon

I just bought and filled up last night with some Tutela ZC75 as recommended in the manual. When I got to the dealership I saw that it was no longer 75W90 but 75W80. I asked the parts guy and he said that it is still the right oil to use and that's what they always put in so it will be OK.
I'm not really too hot oils but I know this means it will be a bit thinner when hot - so maybe not quite providing the same film and protection? Or has the oil technology changed since the oil was originally produced so that the new Tutela does exactly the same job as the old? I don't really want to get rid of one problem to replace it with another a few thousand down the line. Going on a long drive tomorrow so should be able to test hot performance. Any advice would be appreciated.
I note that gazza82 has a 2l TS of the same age as mine and says he uses 75W80 all the time as in this post...

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
The film strength should not be affected, the viscosity is lower so it should give a smoother gearchange then the 75w-90. This is in thoery of course.
Cheers
Guy.

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
oilman talks some "interesting" stuff on PH. I'm still waiting for feedback on another forum - March last year! I think that he did not want to be drawn into an in depth debate concerning BDAs and Quaif 'boxes.
Anyhow in the hopes that he can give us good advice:
Oil for engine, gearbox and diff for Tipo 33 Stradale 1968, 2.0 V8. Annual mileage approx 1,000. Engine oil changed every 6 months, 'box and diff annually. Currently uses Selenia HMS (Competizione) 10w60.

Re: Oil advice and recommendations here
Hi there, can you tell me what the "best" oil for longevity would be on a 147 02 TS 2.0 engine?
The garage I put in to service obviously add whatever brand they favour and said it should be semi synth 10 - 40! Is this right?
Whats the best brand to use on these engines?
cheers
