I would have said having the clutch constantly depressed would put undue strain on the clutch cable meaning it’s more likely to break, but, as you have said you have been doing it for years with no issues.
"To each their own"
I have been told its not good for the clutch before but never had a problem. (Think 147/156/GTs have hydraulic clutches though, not cable operated). In fact all the cars I had have had high mileages (90,000 +) and I m constanly expecting the clutch to go but, bizarrely, driving like this seems to extend clutch life. I had one clutch go, but it had done 130,000 on its original!
Dont need to speed up, as you very quickly learn to sense exactly when to bring the clutch back up to maintain a contant speed, its second nature, I dont even think about it. And if you can see that you need to stop ahead for some reason (a junction, roundabout, traffic lights or a queue for instance) then most of the time you can cut out the engine and have more than enough momentum to get up to the junction/queue/lights etc, most of the time I still have to brake/bring up the clutch as I d go up the back of the car in front! After dipping the clutch the trip readout drops and reads 99.9 mpg. Although on very light "throttle" openings it reads 99.9 anyway!-I think the trip comp' works out the mpg based on accelerator position
Still, you re the one with the higher mpg figure, so maybe I should concentrate on maintaining a constant engine speed (supposed to be best for economy) as much as poss and see if that makes any difference. I do like to use the performance, though so that might explain why I cant top 73 mpg. Might be that my 57-60 mpg is a good compromise!

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
I have had my trip computer tell me I am doing 145.5mpg as I am going along the A470 going into Cardiff and its flat through the city centre.
If you driving style is working for you I would say keep it going, my only observation is that you bring the clutch up to maintain a constant speed, can you not do this with the accelerator, or just have cruise control fitted (I know c.c. is very fuel uneconomic... just a laugh)

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
Lol, yeah the cruise is crap!-It uses full "throttle", consumption is a joke and I can maintain speed better with my foot, including up inclines etc. I always accelerate to about 5 mph above the speed I want to cruise at, then back of a little so I m travelling on a lightl "throttle" opening. I get 70+ average readouts at a 90 mph cruise like this!
I bring the clutch up, but I also feather the accelerator at the same time so its smooth (no passenger has ever noticed, unlesss they look at the gear lever or my feet). Again, its second nature and you get to know how much to press the accelerator depending on whether you re doing 5mph, 20 mph or 100. All 3 Tipos, the 156 and the 147, suffered from bad driveline shunt, so I find you have to feather the accelerator anyway otherwise you feel the engine/gearbox shifting on their mounts everytime you come on and off the "throttle"

Its actually very dangerous to 'coast' as your car is under more control when its 'engine braking' rather then just 'idling in neutral'
Put the Cruise on and it does it for you

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
The cruise is terrible, I get better results from my foot, whether I want to maintain speed, loose it or accelerate

As you've had a chip/remap, your ECU will be incorrect as a remap adjusts the injector pulse length and timing but not for fuel calculating purposes. Your fuel calculator will use the standard pulse length and timing for calculating your economy, but these figures will be incorrect.

doesnt it annoy you pressing the clutch and dropping out of gear every 2mins? pretty sure that wouldn't be good for consumption to although not sure if the same applies to oil burners.

I just do it when I know I can get some "free" momentum, not necessarilly every 2 mins. Its become second nature, so I dont really think about it. Anyway I like changing changing gear/using the clutch, I m a car enthusiast, hence membership of this site!

Right, wonder if theres anyway of reprogramming it via OBD. Should do a proper brim to brim measurement then.

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
Sport 1.6 120BHP = 420
147 105BHP = 340
But if I try I can the sports down to just above 320. I suppose it will all change when I get it back from Autodelta with the supercharger!!!

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
From my GTA, usually bang on what Bazza said at about 280 miles. The last tank was 310, with a mix of motorway and heavy traffic. I have managed about 350 miles from a tank on a run before, and made it back from the Nurburgring on one tank of fuel to Dartford without the petrol light coming on.

Nope a 200 - but she now has 38K on her and has loosened up nicely

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
My 156 1.9 M-Jet (ReMapped) only visits the pumps after 650 miles. I commute 40 miles to work and back each day 30 on main road 10 on motorway (where she sits on cruise at about 90 - 95mph).

500 miles in GT 1.9 on long run.
350 miles in 159 SW Q4 TI 2.4, same run. Didn't time the sale well given oil price increase! any one know why diesel is so much more than petrol now? I always thought it was cheaper to make...

Re: How many miles to a full tank??
I did get 630 from a full tank in my 1.9JTDm GT but they were all done on the motorway over a three week period using cruise control and the best I've got from my 159 2.4 JTDm Ti was 530 and a mix of motorway and round town. Can get the mpg to the book if I drive like miss daisy. It's a shame it cost me £86 to fill up yesterday soon be £100, deep joy time to leave this country, although Germany is about 3 or 4 pence behind us on cost

Its a by-product of making petrol. The reason its more expensive?-Its now very very popular so the oil companies are taking advantage and charging more and the government (unlike almost all other countries) is taking advantage and taxe | |
