Ford RS200 Evolution

This time we have the "super special" version of an already very special car. Only 200 of the regular RS200 were built and even less of the Evolution edition, just 24. For 12 years this vehicle held the fastest accelerating car title. It was built to compete in the infamous Group B of the World Rally Championship.

Engine: Ford/Cosworth BDT-E Inline-4
Displacement: 2,137 cc
Aspiration: Garrett turbocharger
Power: 580 bhp (432.5 kW) @ 8,000 rpm
Torque: 400 lb·ft @ 5,500 rpm
Drive: 4WD w/Triple Ferguson Viscous Coupling LSDs
Weight: 1,180 kg (2,601 lbs)
0 - 60 mph: 3.07 seconds

i admire it technically, as i admire all the group B rally cars but, i cant see how a car that obliterated a wall of spectators and was responsible for killing off a very exciting rally car classification can be cool

Yes the class of rallying grew too fast for the safety issues, but any car that can sound as good as that and still do it on tiddly little wheels and have a slab of Sierra dashboard in it , gets my vote.

Cool, yes, but not as cool (or as impressive) as the group B T16's

Ugly? Are you mad? It was the prettiest 4WD group B car by miles and I worshipped at the altar of RS200 when group B was still going.

It's not cool though.

Awesome spec car. Back in the day, well, 1993 actually... I went to the main Ford dealer to get my 1.1 Pop Plus Fiesta serviced, they had one in the showroom.

Was drooling like a child when I saw it.
They let us sit in it as well. I was expecting some space style interior, sadly is is made up of fiesta/escort/sierr a bits. Was a bit fed up at this.

The interior was a parts bin special, as were the windows and the rear lights.

But the point was that it wasn't built as a luxobarge with leather and slabs of mahogany on the dash to take down to the golf club. It was designed as a machine to go out and win rallies. Unfortunately this, along with the other group B cars, proved to be a little too powerful.

I think though, that like the Statos, despite the fact it was purely function over form, it is still a good looking car.

Couple of facts I learnt after googling this car:
- Reliant built it
- A kit car version was available afterwards based on a Maestro running gear

wasn't the Porsche 959 a Group B car, if so that shades it in the looks depoartment for me. But if you include 2wd there are loads better looking cars, Lancia 037, Ferrari 288GTO and I think the Stratos itself could be run under group B regs

Cool..but none of the Goup B rally cars were lookers, Delta S4, 205 T16, Metro 6R4 etc, but they were all too quick for the job and all of them had big "off's" in a very short time but after they were banned the RS200 and Metro 6R4 went onto success in Rally Cross and some are still competing.

i remember seeing these things being used in anger at the Lombard RAC rally (before it was called the Network Q rally or Rally GB) we are going back to the times when late nigths and early mornings were the norm...

They were awesome, spitting flames, it was the first time i had hear a turbo boost valave and seen a car spitting flames on the overrun....to this day it still amazes me
