Cracked paintwork ????cause

Hi everyone....

Have a look at this..

Any ideas, hoping the dealer will sort this out..

Before I bought the car it had minor damage to the front grill (1-1.5 inch gorge out the lower point of the alfa "V")

Condition of sale was to have this repaired, the dealer done there side of it and that was that...

2-3 months later, unsightly cracks appear, phone the dealer, they arranged another repair (plus gave me a spider for the day)

However the chap (freelance paint worker!!) who done the original repair... said I've pushed the bumper against something to cause it amongst some other BS explanations... anyway he done another repairr The results after 4 weeks are shown below...

I'm sure the dealer will resolve this but anybody got any ideas??

Many thanks in advance of replies

Pauline

Re: Cracked paintwork ????cause

Couple of possible causes here

What causes cracked paintwork on cars? - Yahoo! Answers

Personlly, i'd be looking at it as cowboy paint repairer uses cheap paint or uses incorrect repair process. Especially as the gouge may have been repaired with filler and then blended out across the bumper.

Hope you get it sorted and you can start enjoying your car again.

Wow, never seen that kind of effect before. Does your fingernail catch as you pass it over them??

Hopefully you'll get it sorted properly this time.

Whatever it is it isn't impact damage. Looks like some sort of irregular shrinkage effect and definately more to do with the repair. Maybe the undercoat or filler hasn't set properly.

Fraser's right. The primer ,paint and lacquer have re acted to each other possibly because they have dried at different speeds. Definitely his fault and he's got no idea why.Hopeless.

Re: Cracked paintwork ????cause

The defect is called Checking, it's caused by the primer and colour coat not bonding correctly. Unfortunately it'll require flatting and respraying.

Re: Cracked paintwork ????cause

Hey Sirocco, Thanks for asking.... yeah I believe the dealer will sort this.... they said they will... I've never had anything less than 100% from them so I'm not worried...(other than this contracted repair.... still I don't blame them)

I believe theres been a few management changes within the dealership so discussion is taking a little longer, plus hard to find the time to take the car over to Edinburgh for the day...

Also run some of the discussion above by them and they were in agreement...

Thanks everyone

It'll be sorted soon P x
