Home DIY questions and answers

Most major DIY stores are now running onsite workshops for customers in need of info and guidance to do the odd job around the home.
As AO has a wide range of members from all walks of life, could a dedicated section to DIY be
considered ?
I'm sure there are many members including myself that could contribute to it

have to agree with Gaz it could be a bit of a nightmare, as most so called DIY experts have differing opinions on how to do various jobs around the house, plus sometimes you need to view the property and the environment of the task to give fully applicable advice.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing .................................................i n the wrong hands!

I think it could be helpful.
Although there is a difference between a DIYer and an 'expert'
( hate that term ), but there are quite a few builders on here ( myself included ) who may have something to offer.
Not every proffessional will know everything though ( I know I don't ).

Nice to offer advice IMHO.
I'm not sure where the controversy is.

OK starter for one. How to adjust the new double glazed doors and windows we have so they all operate smoothly. Rollers, hook locks, hinges, shoot bolts and so on. Best bet?

That's your opinion, I'm sure others would disagree

Why the constant paranoia & negative attitude towards anyone with an opinion which differs from yours though

Just saying - whenever I need help I go to the place where loads of folk hang out, and usually I get great advice......about my laptop, about my garden, about that bit of carpentry I am bodging. You just need to post a descriptive and appealing thread. A single thread for DIY would probably be 'messy'. When I'm searching for assistance on the car I generally find I am looking for a thread - or even better, THE thread - on thermostats or brakes etc.

Not sure what you're getting at with regard to the "internal members lounge" and other comments - I'm only trying to help.

Apologies If I came across a little terse, it's part of my make-up and coupled with whisky is a bad combination.

In my line of work I strive to find positive answers not negatives, and it just seems people are more than happy
to post negative reasons rather than how suggestions put forward by members can be achieved.
WOT appears dominated by a certain few bumping up threads when another thread isn't to their liking, which
is the reasoning behind the suggestion of a separate area for members to post Q&A's.

Light hearted as it is WOT can be a little daunting and back biting to the un-initiated.
Only an opinion so please don't shoot the messenger

I'd say it's more a case of people giving their opinion ( possibly based on experience ) of why a suggestion/idea may not work or be such a good idea after all rather than being negative

As for a few people bumping up threads because they don't like others I'd disagree.
More a case of people just choosing to ignore those of little/no interest & replying to those which are of interest

Some threads grow & are often at or near the first page of WOT, others die without ever even getting a reply, that applies to not just WOT but the Image Lounges, Tech Lounges etc & on all other forums.

IMHO

There was a whole load of DIY threads one day (started by Keithy) and I started one off regarding 'stripping and dipping' but mine was the only thread not closed (as mine was infact serious) Got some realy useful replies which helped me get my chairs done

Anyway, good idea

Already been suggested in the 'premio & medio' lounge ages ago & fell on deaf ears...

I'd post a link, but 'some' wouldn't see it :elaugh:
