Alfaowner Classifieds - do they work?

Just wondering if anyone has found using the classifieds through Alfaowner effective in selling (or buying) their cars?
The reason being is it seems that many cars seem to be listed for weeks - are they just not selling or does the classified section not get updated very often?
Unfortunately I've got to put my 147 up for sale and would like to sell it to a like-minded enthusiast but they don't seem to be selling very quickly on Alfaowner........

I think most people prefered when you just started a thread and people made offers or asked questions.

Such is life and people are greedy so it changed!

The ads do get looked at, but not nearly as popular as the old style. If you have a looked after example at a Fair price I'm sure it will sell eventually.

Better off on ebay I should think, which then ends up with its own thread on here... which is all most people wanted anyway!

I have sold one car on there.

However I have also sold a few others on this forum just by casually mentioning that the car is for sale.

Good to hear from you Graduate -Unfortunately I'm not replacing the Alfa - we are going back to being a one car family as we can't justify the cost of running two cars - I don't even need my car to get to work as I commute. I love any excuse to drive it but I've actually only done about 6000 miles in nearly 18 months! Very sad - hope to have another Alfa one day though - but then there are so many cars I'd love to own...an Elise for example....

Didn't work for me Only a few views.
IMHO the old 'cars for sale' pages were far better than the current classified system. An old whine of mine, but valid considering no bugger looked at my Ti on here. I know why they were changed but it hasn't made the chances on selling a car on AO any better.

Yes they were better as they were.

Wait until someone mentions that they are looking for a car like yours on a thread, then pounce.

What happened to the "cars for sale" pages then? - looks as if there was a system people preferred and someone has stopped it........

I did try a protest thread at the time but big brother killed it off!

Never forget there is some one trying to make a mint out of this site - not that it's a viable business, but everyone has greed in them somewhere

What on earth are you on about?? Greed?
How about throwing sloth, lust, pride, envy, gluttony and pride in there as well?

The classifieds are free.

I posted mine on Pistonheads which is free, Adtrader which is free and Gumtree which is free.
Inundated with calls and text and sold for full price within a week.
I never bother with Ebay as its full of time wasters who want something for nothing.

When I was looking for my current Alfa, I checked out the calssifieds on AO but the choice was small and ads had all been on for weeks. Found mine on ebay but dealt outside ebay to save money for me and the seller.

Maybe so, but you cannot be naive enough to think this site is not being commercialised.

What's free today isn't always free tomorrow.

Members want the old style, so where is it?

It is not something that we can offer with the same degree of security and therefore confidence that we once could.

Servers aren't free, hosting isn't free, bandwidth isn't free and time isn't free - yet Alfaowner STILL doesn't charge.
Greed doesn't even come close.

Nothing I hate more than adverts all over a site.
Been on a few forums... and some you have to look hard to see content from adverts.
At least AO hasn't gone down that route, and I hope it never does.

Got to say the old style ads were better for actually selling cars and parts. I'm a signed up member but wouldn't say the site is over commercialised, I basically signed up to get extra PMs.

When I'm not totally broke, I'll re-sign up for that same reason.

That's what Firefox and Ad Block Plus are for! Never seen an advert anywhere in ages!

Of course its worth it, but from a personal point of view, the old style allowed me to browse far easier than the system now. In fact I hardly ever look at the classified section now.
Ive even got my Autodelta tuning box on there. (shameless plug )

Would have to agree that classifieds on here are poor and it baffles me why people don't post up all their cars/parts and anything else for sale (aside from the obvious & well documented issues). I've managed to get a couple of parts off the classifieds on this site, but why do so many go thru ebay etc rather than this site? I've been an Alfa owner for just over a year and the forum is great but the classifieds have been a waste of space IMHO. Was a died in the wool Golf owner before and was a member of the ukmkiv site for years - classified on there were huge and very well used AND FREE. There are also plenty of other car make websites in the UK that also seem to have a thriving classifieds section.

How about a campaign to bring back the old style ads while maintaining the new style. Frankly I don't have an issue people taking a pop at something I'm selling because I'm more than happy to respond if required. I liked the open threads when it was possible for viewers to say what they thought.

So how about it then?
