I just attach the files to the post and use {attach} tags to show it at the correct place in the post.

Hi Chris. Just because the image size is controlled, it doesn't mean that the filesize is reduced. A 1MB photo will still be fully downloaded and then resized to fit.

Pud has the right idea - using the attachment function is the best way of displaying images in any lounge.

I still don't quite understand how it is better for Alfaowner this way. As everyone viewing the image is downloading it (to their temp internet files or whatever) from Alfaowner.com, if it was in IMG tags they'd be getting it from Photobucket etc, I would have though this would reduce the amount of data Alfaowner's servers are having to send.. Also, when I attach an image to a post, Alfaowner is having to store that image, if I hotlink in the images lounge from photobucket, Alfaowner isn't having to store anything..

Or am I wrong?

That's correct, I think the size has been controlled for people with inferior size monitors IE 17" or smaller I found the command in the user options to turn image sizing off

It's more to do with courtesy than anything else, linking directly to large files can be a hindrance to people with slower internet connections/mobile users etc. If the image is attached, only a small thumbnail is downloaded when viewing a page and the user has the choice if they want to click through and view the full-size image.
