Cool Ned.

I recommend we map a car that is a 1.9 JTDm if anything? Unless anyone prefers the 2.4?

I'd prefer to know what you could do with a 2.4; but as I won't get a diesel who am I to say

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

On this, Red Dot offered a cash prize to anyone who provided a 1.9 with no mechanical modifications that dynoed at 200bhp or above, i.e maps or boxes.

There were no takers.

I have no connection with Red Dot but most tuners do not relish this type of scrutiny.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

You can get 200bhp, but lets be frank bugger that were paying 20k plus for our cars (and I drive and pay for an Alfa 159, I dont just sell the box's and then go home in a BMW) you can go too far and who wants to be picking bits of piston out of the false ceiling in the workshop. I'm getting 180bhp dead and 304ft-lbs of torque at 2800rpm as opposed to 254 at around 2200rpm I think thats a good balance of power and safety and I'm happy to post the figures from the a very independent rolling road

About 18 months ago or thereabouts, I'm sure Agusto will recall, we promoted it on 156.net as part of some special offers RedDot offered our members.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

Simple chap me, simple rule. If I thought the TS she has would stand anything like the ferocious 'wellie' I sometimes gave my Turboed Lannie. I might think about getting it tweaked a bit. I don't, so I won't. Hard motor that 16v Turbo, proved its worth over the fourteen odd years I loved her. No let downs at all.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

i think this would be cool to read about, and i dont think its back door publicity as its clearly front door publicity plain an simple but whats wrong with that? itll be interesting to see independent figures from the main men, as ive always been quite apprehensive about power figures claimed by teh ppl sellin the product.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

So the competitors so far are Lotgrace Trading, Red Dot and Autolusso.

Could do with getting Angel and Celtic on the thread, don't think AutoDelta stoop as low as messing with JTD engines

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

I'll speak to Bridgwater college this morning, if I can swing it, we can each get a 159 jtdm 1.9 down to them, do one standard run and then apply our assorted tunes and put the vehicles back on the rolling road to pick up the performance gain and look at torque curves etc. One thing the college may want is a small donation from each of us or alternatively a big acknowledgment off there help on the forum (which seems fair)

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

One final point no induction kits/free flow exhausts/free flow filters/big bits of pipe where the cat should be, or cams with a profile like the north face of the Eiger......This will show up on the standard run don't forget

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

Agreed the cars should be completely standard. However I think we should all use the same car.... And do it all together. On the same day.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

I had in mind everyone coming down in one go, I agree it waters it down if different results are coming in from different rolling road centres, on different days. I would suggest however that if we all bring our own cars the runs will still be valid because we can do one run in standard form for each car, and then each company applies there own tune to there own car and does the second run this will give the same result, and overcome what I would suspect be everyones reluctance to let another tuning company near there cars!

The other alternative would be if a forum member with a 1.9 jtdm is willing to be a guinea pig and bring there car for us to use as a test bed, we use that and give him the tune of his choice as a freeby to say thanks???

This shouldnt present too much of a problem you can fit our unit, in around five minutes and I presume everyone else's takes about the same time.

That is exactly what I was thinking

Could be a nice freebie for the guinea pig! Can someone get in touch with Nigel at Angel. Someone that knows him well please.

Re: Lets have a tuning company competition

Depending on when are you going to do that test, I might be willing to bring my 1.9JTD 8v for your tests. It has some modifications like FMIC,BMC-CDA, de-cat,sport exhaust, Q2....so we will see who can do what

And remember I will be coming all the way from the other side of Europe...

BUT I am willing to participate ONLY if the car is dyno tested on a dyno stand that connects to the wheel hubs!!!

Another thing we can do, we have here such a dyno..I will be dynotesting my car soon together with other Alfa's mostly JTDs, so if you are willing we can do the test here, I will record the whole thing on a camera and post it on the internet. All powerboxes will be returned to their supplier, remaps can be done here as well.

Thinking about it, we can also provide you with free hotel if you decided that you want to come...and there are really cheap plane tickets to Sofia from UK in the winter.

I can find people willing to give their cars for testing...

Take care all,

Petko

The gains are minimal in a normally aspirated petrol car, its usually a case of altering the ignition advance curves and using more knock resistant fuel.
