Site rules re: deletion of posts

Hey guys, just wanted to check something.

I got a PM this morning saying that my post in the AOS lounge had been deleted to "keep the post count down so as not to scare off newbies"

I'm not on here to have a dig, but I found it really strange that a moderator would remove a post in a local forum (from a user like myself who is still a newbie) when in itself does nothing to drag it wildly off topic.

Are there specific posting guidelines I'm missing on here as to what i can and cannot post?

I'd just like to repeat that I'm not wanting to seem like I'm having a rant, and i understand that every internet forum has it's own rules, but this struck me as a bit strange.

Can any mods/admin fill me in?

Cheers

Chris

"FAQ" answers some questions which relative new member might not be aware of.

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/faq.p...#faq_the_rules

AOS lounge?

Hope you get an answer to your question, although without details here it's hard to understand what you actually mean. But as BF said, it's best to approach the Mod/Admin staff directly

Re: Site rules re: deletion of posts

I got the same message Chris, and I think it was just to keep the thread on-track, i.e. pretty much a single post from each person, introducing themselves.

The ones of mine that were deleted could, I guess, be thought of as being 'chit-chat' and maybe give newer-than-you-bies the idea that it was a bit of a clique, with a small group of people just chatting amongst themselves.

One reason I didn't query it is because it said at the bottom "this is an auto generated message, do not reply", but the main reason was because I think I understand why my posts were deleted.

Saying that, there's a few even chattier ones on the same thread now, so I might be miles off.

It could be another new moderator who's a little over keen to use his newly bestowed powers.

After reading the thread (I had to hunt it down) I see that it has been made a "sticky". As an intro thread it is meant to be just that, no extra postings really needed. The person in charge has tried to keep it on topic and will probably continue to clean up the thread as others post. The job of keeping up with threads and postings takes time.

Correct each area has a Rep who mods that area, In this case fast frank is your Rep in AOS and is just keeping the thread clean, as just said its a sticky, feel free to chat and start your own threads in the area lounges

Re: Site rules re: deletion of posts

Hi all,
Sorry it's taken me a while to respond here. I do end up concentrating on the regional lounge and tend to miss other threads at times.

Anyways, The deletion of the posts in the 'Introduce yourself' sticky is exactly as has been mentioned by Jamie, Vantastic etc. It's not my intention to stifle any on line conversation or to wave any 'big stick' at anyone . I leave them on for as long as possible, until I can see that they are at a natural stopping point. When they are deleted it's only done as a 'soft' deletion, i.e. if someone needs to bring a particular post back I can do that for them (it only disappears from View, not gone completely), although you need to ask me to do it fairly quickly (hence the auto messages) to stop it getting swept away all together.

This isn't something I want to be doing a lot of and only intend to clean the 'stickies', as said, to stop them becoming too cluttered. I've even done it with at least one of my own posts that was off topic

Re: Site rules re: deletion of posts

I just thought it looked a bit weird getting a PM from what appeared to be an automated account.

Every forum works differently, it just wasn't as easy as I'd have liked to figure out specifically why the post had been deleted and by whom.

As I said, I'm not trying to make a boig issue but it;s just a way of working that i'm not used to with forums. Thanks for responding Frank, I know what a hard job it is to be in charge of one of these things!

I need to get out more

No probs Chris, thanks for understanding. It's not something that's normally done on here, but I just felt it was important to try and keep the 'Intro' thread as clean as possible for newbies. Yours and other's reactions have prompted me to enter a bit of an explanation on the threat at the bottom of my (the first) intro. Rest assured, after the bashing I've had from others, I don't intend to be 'cleaning' anything other than stickies (unless it really does break the rules of course )
