Wave Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

You are now able to surf the AO site on a bus, train etc... without having to wait for big pages and images to load, its very quick now

This actual message was posted via my blackberry and it is very quick for me. When connecting to our site you should be redirected to the mobile site. Would some one be kind enough to confirm by using their PDA or 3G phone to reply. (Also advise background colour)

Many thanks

AO

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

Is there a speific URL?

I check e-mails on my SE K800i and connect to AO when get a mail about new posts on a subscribed thread. Even though connecting via 3G it can be a pain for long threads.

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

Look forward to trying this out, I did browse AO regularly on hols on an XDAII (gprs) before.
Just turn images off and it was tolerable, but having better optimised mobile content sounds great.

Well done.

Go to the normal URL it should detect your on a mobile browser and give you page's in a text only format easily readable with links to images in threads.

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

If you are on a Blackberry, download the RSS reader from the blackberry site and use the RSS feed (just add www.alfaowner.com/Forum) Saves navigating anywhere, you will be served selected new posts without visiting the actual site.

Am working on a very very very basic scheme at present so ignore any unsightly colours.

I think it's fine text only with links to images, it's about the quality of information not what it looks like

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

Up until now I was using RSSfeeds and
either my k800i's WAP browser in full html
mode or Opera Mini (Which is fantastic!)

Now that this "text-only" "WAP" version is also
available, it's a much quicker way to see what's going on.

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

I much prefered the old way of viewing the proper site via Opera Mini. The new one is no where near as good IMHO. On the plus side, not visiting via a mobile will keep my data costs down

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

Hi Marko,

I am interested as to why it loads the full page up? (you say full page, is it a coloured page)

It is supposed to detect you are using mobile network to connect. Let me know if you can about the colour of the pages you see on your N95

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

ian, i just tried it again, alfaowner.com loads the normal home page we see on the pc, but when entering it does in fact take me to the mobile forums... it must have been something stored in the cache of the phone? it has a full HTML browser and 3.5G connection so normal pages are ok to use on it anyway, but the new mobile version is much quicker on the go!

ill keep an eye on it and report back if it goes back to the 'real' AO again!

Thanks Marko,

My next question was going to ask if you could delete your cache Other than speed, loading the normal PC pages from a mobile can be expensive. On the mobile version we have stripped out almost everything to make it fast, easy to read and much cheaper to use when killing time on the move!

Thanks for the update, it is appreciated.

Re: Mobile Phone / Blackberry surfers

since i have unlimited (fair usage policy thing) mobile browsing i have had a good play, the only concern i have came across so far is that if i am replying to a post the box that appears does not scroll down as i type, ie, if i run out of space i can not see what i am typing until the line im writing on is filled, then it moves down one line. on the pc the box auto scrolls as soon as i start a new line, not when i finish one! any chance this can be fixed?
