Re: Alfa Romeo Event - Location?? - Serious replies only

I think we are about as central in the country as you can get.

My last post did make it sound like a trip the Blackpool but I was just trying to go with Ianís suggestion in making the event more family orientated. I have a young family and I like to include my family in what I do, I always take them with me when I am racing.

Things like a BBQ, a bar and some entertainment for the kids, bouncy castle or donkey rides etc. (that was straight off the top of my head)

If I was to go I would like to make it a day out for the family rather than just standing around in a field looking at other peoples cars.

Ned
You obviously weren't at the same place as the rest of the assembled Alfisti, next door was a railway museum with rides, Thomas, engine sheds, miniature railways etc....also a refreshments in the field and a hog roast I think.

It wasn't just about standing in a field

The majority of Alfa owners live in the southern part of the country.

Did I mention the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is also free? Incidentally the largest exhibition of Andy Goldsworthy's Natural Sculpture is being held there until January 2008. I'm not just biased because he's my fave sculptor or anything but some of his work is truly genius and well worth going to have a look at even if it's not affiliated with AO.

Here's a digital catalogue of his early work for those interested http://www.goldsworthy.cc.gla.ac.uk/

Some samples of the sort of thing you'll see.

OK, how about somewhere central, like Woburn, where they hold the De Havilland rally every year. Convenient ffrrom the M1, lots of wide open spaces, superb location etc.

Woburn isn't central either, does your map of the UK stop at Nottingham or something?

Well Woburn is just South of Milton Keynes.
Milton Keynes was specifically built to be halfway between London and Birmingham, and Birmingham is in about the centre of England, but certainly not of the UK.

Still, you're getting closer

The thing is that the south of Great Britain is much wider than the Northern bits. If you wanted to find its point os suspension it would probably be just south of London - somewhere between junction 8 or 9 of the M25 I reckon

The geographical centre of Great Britain is Dunsop Bridge in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. There's a plaque thing to mark the spot and a red phone booth.
Also there are some swooping windy roads to drive on (if you can see them if its not raining / misty / whatever.)

Tring is the furthest point in the country from the sea, does that make it the middle of the country?

But how exactly is that 'middle' calculated. It may be from furthest distances? I was trying to access the 'middle' allowing for the total area - which despite of what anybody says I'm pretty sure is not too far away fromJunction 8/9 of the M25

Additionally is there a major international airport or 2 near Dunsop Bridge - for all our international members who will obviously be comming

Right then, if we're talking 'In the middle' and 'international' do we go to the Azores or Tahiti ? Either way we'll need to hire a sea going ferry for the cars

Or, even better, we can ask if Fraser can drill a hole to the centre of the Earth , only trouble is it might bee a wee bit hot.

I recon we need to let Ian and the guys do their jou, jou and see where they come up with (YSP ).

Manchester airport probably about an hour away from Dunsop Bridge!
The plaque explains how the centre business was arrived at but I can't remember just how.

Re: Alfa Romeo Event - Location?? - Serious replies only

Without wanting to start the whole 'North/South' argument up, I have found that, in every car club I have been in, the southern members were always very reluctant to travel North where as the northern members were more than happy to always travle pretty much anywhere in the country to go to shows and events

I do agree with Ghosty about the Yorkshire sculpture park in that it is an ideal location with regards Mway access and local travel inns (you can see the sculpture park from the travel inn) and it is free access plus they have plenty there and the grounds are very big. I am sure they would be more than happy to discuss hosting an event there as we have had them there in the past.
