Re: AO Staff response to club changes

well thats the sort i response i was hoping for, until i read the last bit about hiding all the threads from people unhappy about the changes. i cant believe people dont see this as wrong, i realise the site is technically ian's but it is also partly owned by the members(especially the ones who cough up £25), without us ian would have a great looking site with nothing worth reading. this hiding the threads does slightly strike me a bit like the dictator crushing all descent to his rule, do we have no say in the direction of the site? apparently not, im not going to go off on another rant about the right and wrongs of paying but to me ians attitude to anyone who disagrees with what he wants stinks and is why i will not pay and have removed this site from my favourites and other than looking back to see the abuse i get from this post i wont be coming back in here again.(no great loss to anyone i hear you all say ) the site just feels too much like a dictatorship than a community.

overall ive enjoyed my year or so membership of this site but with this new payment problems ive lost all enjoyment of the site, i hope the site goes from strength to strength and i wish everyone well. bye.

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

It's sad to see anyone go, I think, because the site will only ever be as good as its members. Refusing to visit the parts of a website which you enjoy and which remain free shows very strong principles, albeit misplaced in my opinion.

I'd echo what most others have said on this thread, and support everyone involved in alfaowner.com.

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

See Jabber, this is where I'm coming from accusing you of flying off the handle too easily.
The sentence was "We would like to hide (not delete) ALL the recent threads created concerning the club in the hope this will not jeopardise the future of AO. ", i.e. gauging opinion on this as a way of starting afresh and seeing where we go. Not the dictatorial "you will all stop talking about it or be banned" which you seem to have read it as.
You've then gone on to claim that this means we have no say in the direction the site takes, despite the fact that there are at least two polls running at the moment - one started by Ian himself - asking the posters opinions on whether things should be altered again.
You really need to take a deep breath sometimes and check whether you actually read the thing you think, or whether a bit of paranoia/rage kicked in.

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

Sorry to hear that Jabber but my personal opinion about your interpretation of why the threads are to be taken off the site is incorrect !! Maybe your comments are a bit OTT too IMO Ian has taken a lot of flack, personal abuse and insults over this and more don’t really help AO move forward do they

I DID SAY IN MY OPINION BTW !!

I believe the reason for them being hidden/suppressed (or whatever you want to call it) is for this subject/those threads to not cause anymore heated debate etc. which has lead to a lot of ill feeling from/between certain people for whatever personal reasons they may have !! Now that things have calmed down from the initial knee jerk reactions – whether they be right or wrong – I don’t believe that anyone wants to go through that all again !! Do they

Obviously Ian wants to protect his investment in this site and I’m sure nobody – no matter how bitter they feel towards AO/Ian/The Paying Members etc. – would want to see AO falter & die !!

I personally will be sorry to see any members leave the site at this moment in time, and especially before the revisions to the current structure are implemented ! Maybe the revisions may be more to your liking….. why not wait a few days and see eh

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

I think the comments along the lines of "off you go/take it or leave it" from many members who should know better are not reflecting well on the AO spirit and perhaps are even out of character for some of the people who say them

Jabberwocky, I personally interpreted Ians message as meaning that an attempt to address the situation was going to be made soon and that perhaps it might render some of the previous discussions moot.

I'm not by any means in favour of rewriting history on the boards, its against the spirit of an Open community, I hope AO will turn out to be an open community..
However I thought on this occasion that Ian deserved a chance and I would wait to see what he has to say - at which point it may genuinely turn out to have been for the best.

I would like to say that I personally am very appreciative of the work all the AO staff do and happily would donate to its upkeep, to be honest if how to actually do this had been a bit more in your face I would have done it long ago

My personal view is that AO is at a crossroads now despite some peoples comments that nothing much has really changed.

However I do think there is a matter to be addressed regarding respect for the full AO communities past content contribution to AO, and that communications about the future of AO should be cogniscant of that shared history, and a potential shared future.

Regards,
TB

Jabberwocky,

I think its very sad that this matter has obviously upset you in the way it has. I think when any Forum looses an enthusiastic member it is very regretable.

If your main concerns are that as a non-paying member you will be unable to view previous 'input' that has been provided by yourself and indded others then; as I understand it these concerns are being addressed; as is indeed the WOT issue (although onviously I don't know how these are ultimately going to be resolved).

However, things all take time and as I understand it the AO Admin all have full time jobs to undertake and therefore any remedial work to the site or the service it provides will take that bit longer.

I am of the view that you were previously treated harshly and was one of the many who spoke up for you when you were banned. I was therefore very pleased when you returned after your ban was lifted.

But in a similar way that I think you were harshly treated I think some of your remarks against Ian are also unfair.

What I would say is that perhaps you could 'stick around' for a little bit longer and see how things pan out - no-one is saying that those who want to sign up have to do so in the 1st week - and perhaps after the issue of WOT is resolved you may find that even as a non-subscriber you will be getting the same content as you're used to.

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

Best of luck Ian with your plans. I recall your appeal for voluntary funds some while back and even though I was a contributor at the time I could see you would not raise much that way so I am supportive of your new arrangements.

Personally though as with all commercial publications I feel to exclude advertising totally is shutting off a possibly large source of funds and I would have no objection to seeing advertising on the site - if fact in my view it would enhance its value to me as a member.

But as its your site I feel we should respect your decisions - as soon as all the uncertainty clears up about all this I will become a fully paid up member.

That is a fair point, thanks for clarifying

However, as I said earlier, I personally wouldn't be bothered if they were deleted if the act benefits AO's future. That's just my personal thoughts on it which is not what has been suggested ie, being hidden not deleted. Some might argue what's the difference?... but as I pointed out, I personally am not fussed.

Very strange goings on. I have not been on AO for a while as I have been moving house/job and part of the country.
Have not decided if am going to pay yet or not.
I did not get an e-mail telling me this was going to happen, did anyone? Would have been nice to have been informed.

I second TB's opinion. We need to give Ian and his team some space to continue their efforts in upgrading/improving the AO community.

Re: AO Staff response to club changes

This is a deeper thread than normal. I feel that being new to the site, maybe my say is not justified, but comments I make are designed to help. These things may have been said before!

Classified ads Cars, parts, etc.

Use of commercial website links where the website gets a payment from every entry.

Subtle advertising, motor factors, car sales, scrap dealers, specialist garages etc. (How many Alfa specalists are out there that would jump at the chance to advertise).

Club membership with additional benefits, discounts, etc.

Paid club organised events / outings / holidays / trips.

I personally came across this site searching the web for tuning parts for my 166. I can't be the only one! I for one would be happy to use commercial links / advertisers on the site.

Maybe users of this site could set up a (members only) market place and pay for advertising. For example, I have a photography business. I would be happy to pay to advertise this service if the price was right.

I'm sure other users have services they could offer and pay to advertise. Should I want a particular service I would use the market place.

Tell me to shut up if i'm talking out of place !!!!!

Hope I've been of help
