car maintenance site

AO owners and all.

I am looking for a project for myself and I think I have found it.

All the forums are full of little technical docs some with piccies lovingly done by members to help others out. What I find is these guides tend to eventually fall to the bottom of the message list (natrually) and get lost hard to find.

The idea: I will build a Alfa dedicated wiki where all technical guides etc can be stored and members can update etc etc. Be a great "haynes" manual over time. Guides will be easy to find and users can upload pictures etc etc.

I am happy to build test site for AO approval and take from there?

What do you think?

Re: car maintenance site

Sounds a good idea, if the 'Big Wigs 'give you approval. Have to speak nicely to them.

as this thread pionts out there may be legal implications if someone ends up blowing their car up.

But you can add a disclaimer.

Re: car maintenance site

we do have a plan for something like this, a step by step guide but at this time, money and time are the only things holding us back, we will get to it though, next in line is the video and link section that is currently on hold. Once classifieds is launched and bug free it will be completed. Drop me a PM Mr Mike with details, we have the space to host it should your idea top ours.

Re: car maintenance site

Great ide and one that has been on the cards for a while

By "wiki" I hope you don't mean wikipedia, taking the info elswhere? I guessed it would become part of this site as the information here is owned by the authors and the site.

You will probably have to gain permission from the authors too...they may not want to be linked to an "official" how to...don't want to dampen your enthusiasm AT ALL, but just for thought.

Close but not quite - I want to build a dedicated wiki site where the content is added and managed by AO members. It wouls be owned , run, managed by AO

So one of the btight spark AO members who knows how to replace a throttle body would take some piccies of him/her doing it write it up and put on the AO wiki. As you know guides are written and lost all the time. The plan is to stop this. Also if it got big enough, it could be used as a general resource to the Internet rather than just AO members, it would then generate more traffic to the AO site and hopefully generate revenue through advertising, purchasing from the AO store. On the last note: AO store could then supply the most common parts known to fail. So someone follows guide on fitting a K&N filter, rather then hunt around for filter they click on button and they buy from AO store. That could be applied for all parts? Also you couls reverse that. someone buys new brake discs from AO site, they are then directed to wiki where there is a guide to fit - of course with discalimers stating if the **** it up it's their fault

Re: car maintenance site

This would be ace. Trawling through the relevant 'technical' section (the word can sometimes be applied fairly loosely) can often be a bit time consuming and frustrating.
I especially like the link idea for common products, like MAFs, lambda probes, pads and discs, oil and air filters, spark plugs. Would be a bit of a handful actually managing all of the shipping, but would there be the option to use some 'carefully selected' suppliers who we know and trust. If someone places an order, it goes direct to the actual supplier and AO gets a nominal amount for the service for each item sold. This way, if nothing is sold, the retailers have nothing to loose, but if things do sell, AO makes a few pennies to keep the site running and sparkly

If AO were to do this, I think the links should be carefully maintained as we don't want all of that rubbish you get when you search on google for something e.g. "specialist paint suppliers" and then you get links for 'buy your specialist paint suppliers here' or 'specialist paint suppliers for auction'. That would just put people off IMO.

With you 100% on this above.

In general a great idea.

One possible problem is making a "How-to" sufficiently authoritative. Even worse is the problem-solving and diagnosis side of things. For any problem there is usually a handful of opinions and the extent to which they are based in fact and good practice they are is hard to tell.

We'd get more traffic to AO if the "how-to" stuff was hosted here. Why would people bother coming to AO once they found the info elsewhere.

A good idea but lets keep it in-house imho...there has been talk of a FAQ section for a while, this would come under that banner.

Regarding suppliers/parts/sales my comments above were to only direct users using the technical wiki/guide (which would be owned, run and hosted by AO) to the AO store not third part suppliers. But that is down to the AO guvnors. Advertising would (again AO guvnors have the say) I asume be very selective for the reasons you state plus AO want as much revenue comming to AO not third parties. It may increase the amount of parts etc the AO store stock?? In short my origianl idea is just a easy to use technical library which could generate traffic and revenue for AO. How this is acheived is down to the guvnors - balancing revenue sources and maintaining a friendly view is hard - look at google.

My idea/suggestion/intension to to build a prrof of concept. Get AO approval. Either AO or I build on AO systems and AO own/run etc etc etc and either I stand back or assist in with admin duties.

The "technical" area would be part of the forums not a seperate part.

Regarding traffic/new memebers alfa owners may come across the guides before the community? Then decide jioning would be a good thing?

That's good I thought you meant separate as it was called a "wiki"

Re: car maintenance site

could be an incentive to join the club too if there are quality technical guides available free to members. This is a very good idea imo, but to what degree are the guides gonna be screened? some of the ppl who will prolly contribute will be qualified mechanics and others will be bodge DIY men (like myself) there could be a requirement of maybe rating the guides ie. 'did you find this guide useful?' 'would you like to add anything/amend this guide?'

Thoughts Please

I am only going to leave it up for a couple of hours - feel free to create logions and abuse upload relevant car images etc (use the same ame as your AO name
