'Shout box' a good idea?

One of the other forums I occasionally look at (fccuk) has a 'shout box' down the side. I wonder if that would be a good idea on here?
Would it increase bandwidth, because of more people using it to chat, or would it reduce it because they'd use that instead of huge lumbering threads like please ignore?
I don't know the ins and outs, or even how the thing works, but I thought I'd suggest it, and see what the board thinks.

Would keep the HUGE threads down to a minimum, save on bandwidth and limit post-whoring.
Good idea bazza.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoutbox

As AO is pretty (very) tightly moderated for offensive content/abuse/profanity etc, I doubt that it would have the respources/manpower or even the will to facilitate a shoutbox.

Thanks norbert

I have to agree, I am personally against having a chat room.

Agreed, misuse would be my main concern. A private chatroom where AO Club members enter at their own risk would be better imho...not sure these have been successful tbh.

I've been on a couple of forums that have them and imho, they're not very useful

If that wiki article is correct about their requirements, then I'd have to agree.
Not sure why it wouldn't be possible to have it as only registered users though.
the one on fccuk didn't look at all complicated, and only kept the last 20 or so messages, with the name of the messager above each one.
Here, have a look:

Re: 'Shout box' a good idea?

To allow online users to talk without starting useless threads, or resulting in the hulking (and controversial) dinosaur threads we've had in the past.
Also, it'll kill BF's posting rate

That looks like a nice forum there, I've always fancied a Coupe but ''bottled out'' on the purchase of one when I got my 147.

Re: 'Shout box' a good idea?

It's not a bad forum at all. It's got a different air to here, they're very friendly, but it's maybe a bit more techy. Also, the Coupe community as a whole is a lot more accepting of terrible and tacky visual mods, so there's a proportion of 'mad ferit, innit' brigaders present too

We used to have this on the OLD board but was very very very server intensive as is the thank you button feature. Since we removed the thank you button everything worked a treat, but I am trying to rewrite it to be more efficient as I personally miss it

Why?

I have spent hundreds of hours in the AO Chatroom and it was really great fun to talk real time on line with dozens of AO regulars. Can't wait till we have the feature again

Isn't that what the pager is for though

Re: 'Shout box' a good idea?

I suppose so, but pager is 1:1, shout box is talking to the whole community.
Ian: Sounds like I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs! You clearly have all these ideas already in your sights, and are already judging their feasibility

Hey, as they say great minds think alike, however, I am sure most people will adore our latest chat program

Because:

1. It would be very difficult to moderate

2. Because it could be easily abused without proper control

3. because I like the fact that when someone posts on a "chatty" thread, I can go back and read through old posts and see how the conversation has developed.

4. It'll kill my posting rate

Re: 'Shout box' a good idea?

well it will only be available to club members, its not really used for techy talk, its for random live chat/banter which can only increase our addiction/fun
