Rest assured I wont rest until we have found the bug.

I am using BT broadband (512Kb) using IE 6 on XP professional; the site is slow.

i did the following experiment: i saved the opening page to a folder on my pc then changed the skin to AO classic and did the same. I then compared the file sizes. AO classic has fewer pictures and it loads very very fast.

the sizes of the files that i saved are as follows

AO Modern

webpage only 72kb
pictures and scripts 172kb
total file size 244kb

AO Classic

webpage only 46kb
pictures and scripts 79kb
total file size 125kb

so the first thing is that with AO modern you are downloading double the file size. but the difference in speed is more than double. the actual loading times for me this morning were AO modern 13 seconds and AO classic 3 seconds. on a dial up Idread to think what this would be like.

the issue seems to be that with AO modern when you click on a link the entire
screen is refreshed so all of the pictures are downloaded again. In most cases the pictures are the same on all pages. is it possible to add to the script that they should be taken from the local cache so that they are downloaded only once when you first log on to the site?

I shall be using AO Classic for the moment even though i prefer the look of the Modern skin.

not sure if the above helps......

I use AO Modern and I believe what has been said may be worthwhile investigating. I think it does what Ed77 says as you see the screen painting itself as it were I thought those days were gone

Thanks for your continued efforts Ian and for the interim advice

Stuck another 512 DDR (Ram) in, which gives us 1Gig, which is the most that we can fit into our motherboard, I dont know what will happen if we need more?

Worried!

Should we notice some improvement immediately or over time?
Cheers

So it's certainly not a browser problem...
I found out something else: it doesn't take more then a couple of seconds to open a lounge but takes a lot of time to open a topic.

Re: Possible slow-down and bandwidth problem cause?

That I noticed too

either the server is slow on parsing the SQL feed etc... or the smileys and avatars just load slowly!

Re: Possible slow-down and bandwidth problem cause?

It's much faster than a few weeks ago so I can't complain. Although it sometimes can vary on a daily basis. BTW I haven't changed anything on my laptop - so maybe something has changed in the AO background

Ian? - where are you guisier, haven't seen you here in ages Season's Greetings BTW
