Re: Needed to reboot the server

Hi Ian,
Most of the lag seems gone now with IE, so I'm back to surfing as usual.

IE is very slow on AO for me. Firefox is much better...almost instant loading.

Re: Needed to reboot the server

Hmmm, I think it's the server being slow. I tried loading this page in both IE and Firefox and then hit the reload button. (I'm on a 512 K ADSL connection.)

IE 44 seconds
Firefox 53 seconds

I also tried it yesterday with NetscapeNavigator IE and FireFox, and timed two different pages. The results varied a quite a bit; one page loaded quicker in one browser and loading the next page, the situation had changed. But all in all; the server seems pretty slow today, no matter what browser I'm using

Re: Needed to reboot the server

Well there's slow and there's s...l....o....w.

For the past few days I could go out take a walk around the block, come home and fix myself a drink and an AO page still wouldn't be loaded. Today I can actually surf the site, so I'm happy for the improvement. It's still not as fast as it has been in the past, but it's much better.

Re: Needed to reboot the server

I don't know if you remember, but I swapped to Mozilla at home about a year ago for this very same reason: IE just became completely unusable on AO. Eventually, it fouled up with other websites too. I still have no idea what started it happening.

Re: Needed to reboot the server

Okay.... I can type faster than it loads on my PC. I have IE6 on XP Pro and a broadband 512kb connection... but it is dreadfully slow. I'm even typing in the smileys now cos they take way too long to load

Any update Ian?

HardiHardiHar... I'm applying for a tech support job, how funny is that????

Could it be that the AO website is hosted on a server sharing resources with a really CPU demanding website?

Re: Needed to reboot the server

We are working with the server people on this, they seem to think its time to purchase more DDR Ram, which will give us a gig. Is this really going to help as right now we currently have 512 and we are on the verge of using swap which would be slower... Anyone have a view on this... FYI - The CPU stats show that the CPU stresses are okay. Im going back to the host now to ask them what else can be done.

BTW - We use a dediacted server for Alfaowner, Fiatowner, the shop and two very small accounts. Normally a server similar to ours could host 25 accounts. Confused

Re: Needed to reboot the server

I bet the SQL eats RAM pretty much

I'd say 1 Gig is needed for this high traffic site, and I don't think that webservers and SQL servers are that CPU needing ...

Re: Needed to reboot the server

In the past few days I found AO a bit slow. I'm using IE6, WinXP SP2, on a machine with AMDXP+ 2.6, 512ddr, and 512 dsl. We could compare times with other browsers but that doesn't explain why it has become slow...

My guess is that, it's infact the SQL that's eating ram... a lot!

Ian, turn on the Windows Performance tool/System Monitor and have a close look at Memory Object: Pages/Sec. I bet the SQP is paging by now.
