You can't, simply because... you're not The Alfa God.

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Think Quinn means he used to be able to close his own threads...not others though. I'm not aware that this has been stopped, perhaps Ian or Selespeed can comment but to be honest I don't understand the need for it anyway.....if we're talking about the same issue

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Sorry Quinn, meant to quote and ended up editing....can you replace if you remember what you said

wrinx

...no probs, I think I said something about being able to close
the "anonimity in the chatroom" thread and that you did anyway,
which I appreciated

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Still don't think its a good idea personally...kind like geting the last word in an argument..if you dont like some of the responses just close your thread...rather churlish to me.

We had a huge bust up on here ages ago about someone (who will remain nameless!) deleting their own thread and what that does to the other contributors posts and thoughts (deleted them too!)...kinda the same thing to me..but not as bad!

You could alway stop replying to them ...or even ask a Moderator to close them, this has happened a few times and if we agree there's no problem :d

fair enough...but I wasn't talking about deleting threads...just closing em
and leaving the evidence for all too see

interesting to note that in the last instance you agreed with me, ie
you closed the thread after I'd said I would have liked it closed...

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

There is a reason for not giving the members the opportunity to close (their own) threads.

Closing a thread is a kind of a last resort, only if we want to be absolutely sure there will be no replies to a thread we will close the thread. And that usually only happens if a thread turns into a personal fight / or an attack on a personal level.

We don't close threads because a question is answered, a question is withdrawn, a subject is no longer relevant and so on. The reason for this is, that it is always possible that other members may even have better answers or shine a different light on the matter.

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

I just (temporarily) managed to close my thread...so it is readily available

...We can close our own...so...point irrelavent...my mistake...

I still think my point was lost in the ether...I was talking about
members of the site being able to shut down their own threads

NOT moderators cutting them off

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

That was wierd, in the past when you've locked a post I've been able to reply but couldn't this time

Sorry, but I think this "ability" should be removed.

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

I think u have a good point there Steve...but I'd just like it to be
clear...I don't agree with you...but if others do then...I'm in a minority
of one (it seems)

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

What you should have done Quinn was say:

"I think u have a good point there Steve...but I'd just like it to be
clear...I don't agree with you...but if others do then...they can post thier support here"

And then closed the thread.

...hmmm...interesting...but I think I quite like my minority of one

...and I'm certainly not gonna personally close the thread now...it just
wouldn't seem right somehow...

...Wrinx...will you do the honours please...and shut it down

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

I think the lesson here is:

"Think about your post BEFORE you post it"

That way, you won't ever have posted something you regret, and need to lock it to prevent it going on and on and on and...

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Rich...I was sort of hoping for this thread to be lost
in the annals also (was a month or so ago now)...

...I've changed my mind since then and agree with Wrinx's point about
members not closing their own threads

...although...I have to say that all I meant was cutting them off
when a lot of other members started dragging/drawing them out...

...nothing churlish about the desire

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Sorry to prolong the pain Quinn. I Recently made a post that I wanted to stand out, with no clutter (term?) therefore I closed it immediatly. I think it's a good feature, no need to use it that often, and it's rarely used, but sometimes it's called for.

-- Hoygs

Now lets see, is there a thread in this lounge I can reply to, to make this topic move down in the ranks, and let Quinn of the hook. Hmmm still searching must find one, must find one, must find one

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

What about just finishing off by saying, "Now I don't want to hear anymore on this matter" and have a folded arms smilie?

Bit like when your Mum used to tell you off?

Re: Why can't we close our own threads

Is this why Spiderman couldn't close his "botched" (anyone can make mistakes - I'm always at it ) attempts on the final thread on what AO's drive? Maybe I think perhaps the instigator of a thread should be allowed to close a thread unless someone asks a moderator to do otherwise - therefore requiring an individuals to state why the thread should continue (maybe a bit too much admin on the moderators part?). Deletion - is not a good idea unless of course its offensive in the moderators opinion (and perhaps others). If someone wants to discuss further to a thread that has been closed, they could always open up another anyway? No? There are plenty of repeated threads I have seen, and I haven't been here that long. Maybe I should keep my nose out it - but just a thought nonetheless.
