Alfa registry

Over in the So how many and where are the GTA's ??? thread there have been a couple of mentions of better ways to manage such a list.

I've been thinking previously that a registry would be nice, ref. last posting (So how many and where are the GTA's ???) in the GTAs thread, which say:
...since the forum most probably resides in a database, it could be used for a proper wordwide Alfa registry. Not only the GTAs, but all models, with an extensive form for filling in details and attaching pictures. The registry should be search and sortable, of course. It would tie nicely in with the "Member car" link and the gallery.

Just one or two afternoons of PHP there, right?

less work than the cool wall was probably, its just adding a few fields to a table and building a cutom module for the site.

You could even have the vin number on there and make it seachable for prospective owners. Which could take the headache out of buying secondhand.

Re: Alfa registry

I've been thinking about this for a while and as
"Well, I think someone who knows PHP, vBulletin and AO would be a much better candidate..." this sorta points at me, it'll end up in my lap anyway if we go ahead with it

There's a few projects going on at the moment so we're really busy but I did want to try and do a GTV Cup register. A Cup reg is easier as it can work on the number. This means people might be more forthcoming with information but still have the ability to not enter a registration number.

Has anyone got any ideas how a (for example) GTA reg could work? Would users want to enter registration numbers? If they don't, is a register any use? Other than 'numbered' limited editions; would the VIN number be the best identifier? etc. Food for thought.

Building the bare bones is quite simple. Adding searching capabilities is just a little time consuming. Working out where it should be located/linking to the gallery all adds time. That said, I still think it's a good idea

Any ideas/detail on structure, content, functionality etc are welcome... I'm still not making any promises though

First of all if somone makes a registry, make a unified one for all models. Some people may be sensitive about VINs and reg numbers on the tha intarwebs, so that bit should probably be voluntary. I still think it wouls be useful and interesting. For the Cups you'd just tick the 'Limited numbered edition' box and fill in yours.

It really is, innit The fancy bits could always be added in time.

As for the exact fields and so on, Perhaps you have thought of something already? Posting a draft at some point would surely get some responses.

Think about it - AO hosting THE world wide registry If one goes about it a bit seriously, an announcement could be made in the proper channels (Alfa clubs, various national Alfa sites, etc.) to get the ball rolling..

Re: Alfa registry

VINs and Reg Numbers should be taken but not on display or displayed only with the owners permission, they are very useful keys for a database, it would also stop double ups of the same car within the database when the cars get sold on.

VIN is the most obvious the way to go; reg numbers can be changed on a whim.

This is a really good idea for the more limited run models and AlfaOwner should do it before someone else does

Hi all,

Just an idea from me... OK, rather than a register of sorts, would a "My Garage" not be a more personal way to go? Calling it a Register seems a bit out of fashion/date To me the concept is perfect but need more personality so what about a searchable "my garage" which could consist of:

Search
Images
Videos
Modifications
Expense tracker (If you dare)
BHP and Torque
rolling road graphs
People could tag your car in images (Like face book )
Servicing reminders - For instance you could be prompted to input your mileage every month, this will track when your service is next due (because you already set the mileage etc at first use)
Track MOT, Insurance etc...
If VIN plates are used then we may be able to tap up Alfa for a feed to recall information, after all this may of stopped the recent MiTo problems more quickly!

Any how thats all I thought of in 5 mins, there is so much we can do for sure, but we do have limited resources when we talk about development, soon we may be able to announce something that will help get this off the groun more quickly as we may be able to out source it as we have so many projects on at present/pipeline. We do want to give you what you want so I would be interested in much more details or ideas.

Regards,

AO

I personally wouldn't want/need all of that but not a problem. The real purpose of this, as far as the register idea goes, is to have cars uniquely identifiable, removing the chance of duplication. So vin numbers would be mandatory, I would say. Tie up with Alfa ... good luck ... but maybe a step too far, as far as data protection?? Dunno.

Good stuff though
