Re: reply in classifieds - please restore

On posting in classified ads, I can see the need to keep them clean. but also sometimes a quick reality check on price can be useful. I like Alfas and I've owned a string of them. However some of the ads in classified section are way over book! You'll have people wondering why their car doesn't sell! Might be helpful?

Maybe the person who posts the advert should be able to select whether there can be repiles or not.

That way its up to the seller.

Valid point but technically not easy the way it currently is working and with the new version coming, we should concentrate on coding that.

Thanks for posting it up though

Re: reply in classifieds - please restore

This is driving me nuts - I have attempted to get in touch with several sellers - their PM boxes are full (do you get more room when you are a paid up member?) and I now have no wa of getting in touch with them....grrrr.

Also 5 messages in your PM box is very restrictive - I am only an occasional user and the additional 15 to sign up full is something I struggle to justify at a time when money is tight.

Pity as I rate this forum but am getting fed up with its restrictions.

Some members allow you to send them an email too.

Just go on their profile (eg. mine here: BigFoot) and click on "Send a message via email to [user name]" under Contact Info.

i think the same...
i mean, that's not even 5 sent and 5 received, that's 5 in total.. and imo that's not enough.......

as for the posting in classifieds, surely it makes sense for any questions being asked about the car to be asked in the same thread that it's being advertised in?
That way the same questions won't be demanded by potential buyers again and again as the answers might be in the for sale thread..
if the question isn't already there, they can ask and have it answered by the seller, and then that's one more bit of info about the car that's up on the thread...

personally i can't see how any of that's a bad thing?

my 2 cents for the night

Chatting about the cars people are selling was the best part of this forum

I presume it was the debate over that GTV Cup that put an end to replies?

Re: reply in classifieds - please restore

I'd like to see replies restored. If there is a new classifieds feature coming then it won't matter that much as it won't be for long anyway. If a seller doesn't like a post on his thread he can report it and ask for it to be deleted.

If more mods are necessary then one should be recruited, I have a lot of free time since being laid off so I would be willing to put my money where my mouth is.

Re: reply in classifieds - please restore

The trouble is we use to get lots of complaints from people selling cars; asking us to remove negative (but often truthful) posts.

As an example, there was a chap selling his nearly new GT. I knew from his previous posts that he's had his sills badly dented by a trolley jack / workshop hoist (easily done on the GT). He described the car as mint so I posted to ask about the sills He was not best pleased but my view was he was misrespresnting so felt the need to say.

There were loads of other complaints too

I see what you are saying but also fully undertsand the reasoning behind the "new" ruling.

As for the messages, if you join AO that won't be an issue

Not to sound too much like an upstart (), but..

Firstly, its a free service, people are fine to complain about unfair negative comments, but it is such a valuable thing for the "negative-but-truthful" comments to come out from people who know the car's history but don't have an agenda (making money), if they don't think the car will stand up to possible criticism, then they can go on Autotrader, Ebay or Pistonheads.

I sold my car on here, I was honest about its condition and got nothing but positive comments on my for sale page, a few mutterings about the asking price but I tried my best to justify my asking price, and although I didn't quite get what I first asked for, the final figure was closer to my asking price than some of the prices people had said they would have been willing to pay.

If I had tried to hide something, the truth would have come out, and an AO member would have been protected from buying a dud.

Another thing, I saw a car advertised for sale today, but the guy hadn't mentioned how much he wanted for it, or the cars year of registration. If there was a facility to reply, I would have, to ask for the price & age, but I didn't bother because its too much hassle deleting a PM from my inbox so I can send one, all to help him sell his car.

So in effect you are helping the sellers deceive us by preventing the truth coming out?

If you hadn't asked about the sills what if another member had gone to see the car on the strength of the advert and wasted 150 miles of petrol to get there? Or hadn't noticed the sills because there was a skirt in the way, only to find out later that his car was not as mint as he thought?

Just to explain.

That GTV Cup was advertised as Number 120 which it clearly was not as Number 120 was parked on my Drive at the time.

I PM'ed the seller got no reply and reported that thread to the Moderators who in turn did not get a satisfactory answer which resulted in the thread being locked.

It had infact been a Typo and the guy did have a genuine Cup just not Number 120.

The trouble that mis represented cars cause and the amount of arguements I've seen oh here I can see why the Reply function was taken away.

For those that complain about the lack of PM space you know the answer

Whats worse, arguments, or someone buying a dud car that could've been avoided?

I've never bought a car off AO, but I have sold one on here, and if you do nothing wrong as a seller you have nothing to worry about from replies.

As someone with a car still for sale, I tend to agree with you Pud. I would actually welcome comments, but sometimes the comments can appear to be uncalled for.

No! Not at all. We're just keeping out of it for the reasons I stated.

It's between buyer & seller now. What goes on via emails or PM's or whatever is nowt to do with us unless anything specific (conduct wise, trade sellers & so on) gets reported.

I've never sold on here and I'm glad I didn't because some malicious toe rag would probably have posted "Wasn't that the one you crashed and rolled five times at Croft"

Like SR said keep it between buyer and seller much better all round I think
