"New Posts" suggestion

I've thought long, hard and repeatedly about this suggestion as it could be misinterpreted but I'm throwing it in to the pot trusting that AO will understand what I mean however badly I articulate it!

Can we exclude "introduce yourself" threads from the "new posts" search button at least for the last 24 hours?

Bear with me, please. I'm not suggesting new members are unimportant nor unwelcome. Quite the opposite is true. However, the success of AO means that we have a lot of intoductory posts in the last 24 hour search. 99.9% of these, quite rightly, generate nothing more than a few welcoming comments but they can clog up that search if you simply want a tool for a quick catch up.

Does anyone agree or not?

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

2008-15 New 159Ti experience: overwhelmingly positive. Reliable and fun over nearly 100k.

Re: "New Posts" suggestion

I do agree with you Jim. When people go through saying 'Hello and welcome' (to which I have done myself, and have no problem with) and it stacks through the new posts search, it does clog it up.

New members help to make this place, and have no problems with people saying Howdy!

Re: "New Posts" suggestion

I could not agree more! Good suggestion Jim
Although I myself generate quite some of these Hi and Welcome posts, they do not, in my opinion form the stuff that makes searches (of any kind) worth while.

Phew! Thanks chaps. I was concerned I might have been wrong but the initial feedback suggets otherwise.

Re: "New Posts" suggestion

Personally I don't mind either way, but do see where Jim's coming from.

How are you all supposed to respond to my annoying 'Help Me!' threads when these annoying 'Noobs' are clogging the place up?!

Thumbs Up Re: "New Posts" suggestion

I've mentioned this before and I agree entirely!
You managed to get the message across better than I did though Jim as people were a bit miffed at my post.
Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned "post whoring" in mine?
:dunno:

Maybe that was a bit inflammatory! Glad you agree though.

To be honest I think the default option should be that you're not subscribed to hello posts, as to be honest I don't really want to be notified everytime another member says hello to someone I've just said hello to. I know it is possible to unsubscibe from these posts on an individual basis, but it is a pain to do that, and I keep on forgetting

If I were restrict myself to welcoming South-Netherlands 156 SW 2.0 JTS owners on AO, I think my first post over there would still be some time away

Gary: in the Profile, under options, you can disable this feature:

When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread.

Default Thread Subscription Mode: Do not subscribe.

Then you can manually subscribe to those threads you are really interested in

Re: "New Posts" suggestion

Good idea. I'd like to be able to make it more general & be able to do a new posts search only on user-selected sections; I've made that request in other forums using the same software & been told that it can't be done.

Re: "New Posts" suggestion

something just odd happened...but I'd rather not mention it

...anyway...all new members maybe could have a 10 post
delimiter (it's only 10) and then get a way into getting
some kind of pass or badge...

No No...that reduces the effect of the "introduce youself" forum

You'll never eliminate fools...but if you can weather it out
anyway...and keep it up (let's not go sexual there)

then you eventually forget how bad anyone was

then you understand who you were in the 1st place

...and if any one believes that pile o' crap then I've got
a self-help book out next Monday called "The Malicious Mllitias"

it's all about how the Viet Kong were actually quite good at
massage

BMW 635csi, but I also love Alfas, 155s in particular

Well they do say great minds think alike......

.....and fools seldom differ!

Hopefully they'll listen now.
