Why is there no postcode system in place on AO

We can all tell where people are located I.e if you look to the left of this you can see i am from Dorset.
Why is there not a system in place where we can enter our postcode and if there is a meet or an event nearby the regional rep for that area can automatically PM everyone in that surrounding area.
I'm sure that i have missed out on events purely because i had no idea they had happened.
And this would surely increase attendances.
It cant be hard to put in place. And obviously you should be able to opt in or out if you don't want to be notified of upcoming events.
I know there is a dedicated area on the forum for regions, but im sure it rarely gets looked at. I know i only check every so often.
If any of the mods read this can you bring it up as it can only be good for attendances in future events, and everyone knows that more people = more fun.

If you agree with what i am saying here feel free to co sign the thread.

It does seem that use should be made of the available technology so
I agree with this idea

Re: Why is there no postcode system in place on AO

Maybe just the first portion of the postcode rather than the whole thing to identify posibly down to street level. More secure for members that way, just a thought. Unless of course the postcode won't be visible to others but only say admin, then it wouldn't matter anyway.

Actually- it does sound a bit complicated, thinking about how to spec it... ie radius it should cover like say when autotrader looks at your postcode to find possible cars and all the locational criteria then matching that to a database of geographical postcodes etc. BUT maybe it's simpler these days with tools on the web.

Re: Why is there no postcode system in place on AO

Its really not that difficult to implement. Facebook do it with networks. Fish4cars do it with a radius from your postcode. And like you said autotrader also do it. So its not like the tec is not available. I think the easyest way to do it would be to follow the facebook route and set up networks that we can join. I.e portsmouth and bristol etc. And im pretty sure we already have area reps. So its would just be a case of opting to join there network. We would not even have to part with our postcode. Simple.
This can only be good for future events. And improving the site.

Re: Why is there no postcode system in place on AO

Hi all, most don't know that there is a development freeze at the moment as we plan to release a new version of AO. This is not an upgrade but a completley new site/software. We are also in talks with a large italian company about these very issues, I just hope that we are able to combine our efforts and bring you a site that we see us through, we always have the ideas, we don't always have the funding to turn these ideas into reality, however with a bit more time and some luck I am sure we will get the site that we all want and deserve.
Technically speaking the centenary year of AR will also fall on our 10th year of service so this should prove our commitment to you all.

Sit tight.

One small suggestion, when the migration takes place could the Trolls be migrated elsewhere :HEADBANG:

Alternativley. It would be good if people chose their 'region' when they registered :eye: Then, no post code required :eyebrow:
