Racetrack in Cyprus
I have been informed by an inside source a few months ago, that the race-track issue was actually getting somewhere
However, we now have a different issue !
The track in Axna which is the shape of Cyprus and owned by Christakis in Axna, has been given the "go ahead" to finish the track ! ( just a mouth to mouth roumor I've been hearing ).
I read on the internet though, that the old Larnaca airport will either be transformed into a racetrack, almost big enough to host Formula 1 races ( but economically difficult ), or into a convensional center ( as if they have so many things to talk about ).
Apparently, many big companies have shares into this project, and according to them , they will see which option is the one people want the most.
They said that even if they build a race track or a convensional center, it will be something unique in Cyprus.
Soooooooooooooo.... who knows... maybe we will end up with two tracks !!!!!!
Can anyone here shed some light here ?

I have my doubts about the roumors for LCA A/P.
The reason is because the runway and the aircraft parking areas are still used, and as far as I know there are no plans to abandom that area. Actually there are services like the Cyprus Airways hangar where Demetris Amerikanos works and the new Excecutive/Presidential terminals that are in that area of the airport. The only area that will be freed is the cargo village area which is not much. In any case the roumors I hear say that the old terminal and the cargo area will become a shopping/conference center.

Would be nice to do an Alfa Track Day event , dont you think ?

The Achna track is just 2 minutes from my parents in law.
I know it's been delay bacause the katselaries who are around that area are afraid that it will disturb their animals
I've also heard that, since a few months ago they got back to bussiness to finish the track... sooner or later.
If it finishes, you will all know where to find me in weekends

Racetracks in Cyprus, thats stirred some memories for me.When I was a kid my family lived in Cyprus in the early 70`s and my Dad used to race a Kart,I remember there was a Kart track pretty close to Limassol near the sea(remember having to go past pink flamingo`s to get to it!),another at Famagusta and another at Nicosia.I believe They were run by the military guys based in Cyprus at the time.I spent a lot of time at those Kart tracks and would be interested to know guys if they are still on the island. Cheers Paul.

The one in Famagusta we cant tell if its still there mate.
Famagusta is a "ghost" town since 1974 where the Turkish troops invated Cyprus.
As for the other one... as far as I know, flamingo's are found in Larnaca. I dont know where you mean

I remember in the 70s & 80s, the Sovereign Bases military personnel used to have kart teams and their meetings were arranged using their own airport fields. Cypriots having pro karts were allowed to attend in certain meetings only. Of course special passes were given to them. I am afraid haven’ t heard anything the last 20yrs.
The one near Limassol was at "Episkopi" Sovereign Base (Flamingos were found at the adjacent salt lake) and the one at Famagusta area should have been at "Ayios Nicolaos" Sovereign Base. At Nicosia area they used the abandoned after the 1974 Turkish Invasion, "Nicosia International Airport" runaway, still controlled by the United Nations military personnel.
Better contact the Sovereign Bases H.Q..

The track in Achna is close to being finished and they have already started doing some events there. They've had at least 2 events that i know for sure there and they were both drift competitions/demonstrations. They were done at the large parking area of the track and not on the track itself. Another track has also been given the all clear for work to start and that will be in Menogeia.
So in total we will have 2, possibly 3 tracks in Cyprus. I, for one am a very happy camper.
Also if you dont feel like waiting for one of these two tracks to open to arrange for an Alfa Trackday you might want to contact Daytona Raceway in Nicosia and arrange something, it's a large go-kart track big enough to take a car, the last couple of months they've been organising every Saturday morning a "time attack" style trackday for cars. You pay 20euro per car and each car goes by itself for up to 6 laps, they take down times with these GPS boxes they attach to your car and you can then compare times with your mates and stuff.
It's not a REAL trackday but it's pretty fun, i've already been once but couldnt find time for another try as i used to work on Saturdays. Anyway i know that they did a Mini track day there so you might be able to work something out with them if you want.

I agree with ga41, even though I think the daytona track is too tight (a lot close corners) and I don't think it will be good for the cars.
Minis are small cars and it's easier to drive them in there but imagine putting an Alfa GT or even a 156 in there.
We can organize that Cart event in there

Once you figure out the racing line and start using all the width it's OK for cars. For example the fastest naturally aspirated car there is an E46 M3 CSL which is the same size, if not slightly larger as the Alfa Romeo GT and the 156. My current car weighs about 1.5 tonnes and at first was a bit unwieldy but once i had the racing line down it was fine.
Anyway i thought you guys might be interested in organising something or at least passing by a Saturday morning, there's usually a wide variety of metal there, from 700hp Lancia Integrales (a hill-climb racer) to a 500-600hp twin turbo RX7's, to Honda S2000's to 964 Porsche 911's, Evolution's, Impreza's and so on. There was even a Dodge Viper there a few weeks ago.

So you just go there on a Saturday or Sunday, pay60 euros and you can enter with your car and drive or there are specific hours that you must go there in order to do that?

It's Saturday mornings, from 9 till 12:30 i think, costs 20 euro per car and you can do as many sessions as time allows, each session is 6 laps.
The less cars there are, the more sessions you can do, simple as that.
Oh they make you sign a form the first time that basically says that you take full responsibility if you have a crash...
