Mito QV fully automated boot open Mod

Undergoing a modification to my Mitos boot.

I want the boot to fully open when I click the boot open button.
After a lot of intensive reserch I have come up with a solution!

I am going to be installing additional springs to my gas struts.

These have been ordered and I will keep you posted on their success along with a complete installation details.

Let me know your thoughts?

if it works I will be very keen to do the install myself!

You will need to keep the force in control at the end of the opening though, as I imagine a lot of force will be needed to push the boot past it's pivot point.

Seems like a great idea but I,d check that the mounting points for the gas struts will take the extra load required when closing the tailgate as well as hinge mounting points

Update.......The springs are arriving tomorrow.

I will upload some pics and advise on additional parts needed to fit, just as soon as I have figured it out.

"Alan Sprint" Good Points, however, I have had the springs custom made to hopefully give enough upward force for the boot to open enough for the gas struts to take over.
I may be totally wrong but for £2.40 per spring its worth experimenting.

Mr Sprint you are inspiring.
All comments welcome, However a good grounding will be in order if I break my QV.

Really only £2.40 per spring! If this works, you'll be a genius!

Update....

Springs arrived today

I have tested one of the spings on the strut and can report that things are looking good.

WOW The single spring is opening the boot nearly to the point of opening with the gas struts.
I think with the second installed then it should work.

I will install the second spring over the weekend and will keep you all posted.

If all is well I will upload a tutorial and video of the Installation, along with a link to buy all the parts needed.

This is starting to look like it will work.

Mito Matt - I would suggest that at this stage £15 spend along with a 30min install time should do the trick.

Great news
It works.

I need to get hold of some black heat shrink to cover the combination of washers and springs and to hold everything in place but my goodness it works.

I just need to learn how to edit videos this weekend and I will upload.

Ok everyone here you go...

Alfa Romeo Mito Automatic Boot Opening Modfication - YouTube

Please note the small noise it makes is just because the heat shrink has not been installed yet.

I will be putting this on next week, however it gives you a chance to see the Modification before its covered up.

Enjoy

Looks good although it is impossible to actually see what you've done in the video.
Any chance of some close up shots of the mod please.

Does it make the boot any harder to close?

Also I would be a bit worried what would happen in a multi story car park or somewhere where there is a low roof.
I suppose no different to now you would just need to lend a hand to it to stop it hitting.

Looks good, but as mentioned can we have a close up of what you have actually done to get the boot working in this way!

col996s - thank you for your comments.

Pics to follow.

The boot closes exactly the same and needs no additional effort to close.

I would not know about multi story carparks as my mito does not go in them in fear of getting dents, however most carparks should allow for a boot to open!
As you say a good hand hovering over should be fine, but the boot does not fly open it is controled and steady.

Any ideas how to upload a picture?

My wife did this to our one week old Porsche Cayenne It has an automatic boot opener and she didn't check to see how low the roof was in the multi storey car pack before she pressed the button inside the car to open the boot

It's going in to a local detailer to get detailed for winter, so hopefully he will be able to polish out a fair bit of the scratch!

Ok I have a shopping list completed.

Total spend £15.

I will put together a tutorial in due course.

I would just like to test this for another day or two to check for defects, however I have been opening and closing the boot all day (mostly to see the reaction from passers by) and can confirm that it has not failed once.
