I seem to be having the opposite issue to everything I have found during a search (generally the boot will not open).
The problem is that the boot will not stay closed. It latches on to it's 'hook' but doesn't stay there as the latch just pops open again when any upwards pressure is applied to it.
i had the same problem a few days ago, the solution is the same as in the situation that the boot does not open. the problem is in the cables going to the boot. in my left hand side mito the cables are inside the rubber hose at the top left of the boot when it is open.
Further to Rockhopper's comment (and again assuming that the wiring is the issue, rather than something up with the latch mechanism) - Alfashop.co.uk sell a repair section - their part number is 8061005 (could even be the same supplier as the next part I list below - dunno!). http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-mito/937865-mito-tailgate-wiring-harness.html
Dunno how easy/hard it is to cut open and re-glue the rubber cover to try fix just a single broken wire, but perhaps the risk is if one's gone the others won't be far behind so using a repair section with good quality insulation may avoid having to fix further wires in future (I think some might use silicone insulated wires for better durability?).
Thanks for the replies, I will check it out this weekend. Unfortunately it's the wife's car and she is working away during the week at the moment so I'm just going on what she has said about it!
This ended up being the lock mechanism itself that was broken. It was making a bit of an odd sound for a few weeks as if it was struggling and eventually it had packed up in the open position (a visual indicator was that the emergency release button was stuck in which was preventing the latch hook from staying closed).
Not cheap for a new lock but at least it's sorted!
