Alfa MiTo is the cheapest modern car for me as new driver to insure?!
Having been seriously panicking about insuring my first car, I decided to try, just out of interest, to see how much a 1.4 16v would cost me to insure; best price was £1346.55 fully comp, a price that beat 1.2 Fiestas, Corsas, and 1.0 Aygos!
I genuinely cannot believe this!
I heard/knew the MiTo was cheap to insure, but isn't this a little OTT? Is anyone else as surprised at this?
Now, in other news, where can I get hold of £10,000...?

Thats reasonable. I paid a similar amount on a 1.8l car 6 years ago, which was my first car, so thats about reasonable (with inflation an' all ). Its well worth it though (providing you don't crash)- having full no claims in your early 20's is worth the expense in the early years.
Unsure if you are male or female? If you're female its reasonable, if you are male its a fantastic deal

Yeah, I'm male!
If only I had the cash to buy one, I'd pick it up in a heart beat. Oh well, will instead be doing £1900 for a 1.1l fiesta by the looks of things.

Its evil I know. I remember with my first car, my 1.8l was 8 years old (think I paid around £1200/year for insurance in that first year), but I got the offer of a 1.1l B-reg car for free (unsure what it was now, possibly something like a fiesta?? if they made them that far back), but they wanted £2200 to insure it - I suppose it was more appealing for joy riders, easier to nick with it being such an old car with pretty much non-existent security features.
Life is cruel but as I said, having full no claims in your early 20's is fantastic (which means no crashes or claims in the next few years) - when you are finally in a position to fund such a car comfortably, you'll already have your full no claims built up- whereas your mates will probably be just starting out alone, having just come off mummy & daddys insurance, therefore being more limited on the vehicles that they can afford to drive.

You could try Elephant.co.uk, they undercut the "best deal" that Aviva could offer me me almost £400! Not that I'm under 25 or a new driver, but I had only one years no claims, and wanted Misa on the policy (a new driver of 2 months). Ended up being under £300 fully comp.

Adrian Flux tend to be very very good for under 25's (no doubt will get slated by people on here as they tend not to fare as well for the over 25's in standard cars), and Endsleigh are good for students & professionals (and particularly students that are studying for a professional qualification).

There is another way to look at this, when I was young there was no way I could afford the stupid fees to insure a car so my dad put my car in his name, with an any driver insurance policy. I did this for years, meaning that I now only have 1 year no claims bonus (nearly 2). BUT, I can now afford to pay the high prices so it doesn't bother me as much. I'd rather pay a lot now I can actually afford to buy and run a decent car than waste my cash when I was younger. My first car was an F-reg escort that cost £300, the cheapest quote I got to insure it (third party, fire and theft!) was £1600! At the moment, with my 156 I am paying around £850 a year for me and my girlfriend. Basically for me it was a choice of pay loads of money when I was young and couldn't afford it, or pay loads of money now I'm older and CAN afford it. I took the second option...

My first car was an E-reg Metro which I bought for £500 in 2004. The insurance was something ridiculous like £1900, even in my mum's name with me as a named driver. Fortunately this was with Direct Line so named drivers got NCD too.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how (comparitively) cheap the Mito is to insure for me, a male in his early twenties - even if I were to get the 155bhp Veloce!

I personally think insurance prices for new drivers (especially young ones) are way out of proportion, especially considering that young people normally have 3rd party insurance and if they crash they are more likely to crash into a bush on a country road than into another expensive lamborghini causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
But then you can say that the price is justified because of the presonal damage claims that your passengers might make. However, the number of passengers that are seriously injured in crashes is low

The alfa mito is my first car as well. I'm afraid your insurance quote may be inaccurate, as the MiTo's insurance group was rated lower than it actually is.
I originally got my eye on the mito as it is a sporty car with such a low group, but then it increased. Still got the mito though

Being 36 helps as my insurance is £333 a year with Direct Line...fully comp, legal cover, no claims protection, courtesy car, named driver on the policy...so I am really happy, they were the cheapest.
When I was 21, I was driving around in a £400 car...third party only and it cost £600 to insure which I thought was expensive then and I wouldn't pay £600 a year insurance now...

Insurance prices for young drivers are quite ridiculous! £1,600?! There's no way I would pay that much for insurance ..... it was £600 when I was young!

Haven't got a quote for the MiTo yet
My first car was a 1972 Mini Clubman Oldest renewal I can find is when I was 21 with 3 years NCB - Premium £115.91
At 23 I bought a Mini 1275GT which I promptly bored out to 1340cc with a K&N and LCB RC40 exhaust. 'Forgot' to declare the mods to the insurer and with 5 yrs NCB it cost me £145.80
Erm, am I a bit old? Do you think I should get one of those beaded car seat covers? Or maybe that turntable thing on the seat which makes it easier for me to turn when getting out of the car?

you could bring the insurance down further by simply adding a parent to your policy, that will take it down even if they never drive it as it says to the insurance company that sometimes the named/experienced driver will drive it in place of you....
my cousin whos 20 pays 2700 a year for his clio albeit a 172

Spare athought for the few people out there who, due to a medical complaint and as a consequence short licence (renew evry five years), find getting insurance a bit tricky, like myself. I remember trying to insure my first car an old Fiest with Direct Line. I thought 'thats's cheap' until I told them about my licence. When I managed to get down from the ceiling, I phoned someone else.
