The TS engine is reasonably powerful for it's age its just got a lot of weight to shift. At nearly 1400 kg, the 916 is never gonna be quick. I would start with a compression test to see if its worth doing first. Then a freer flowing exhaust will help a bit. A rolling road remap is probably your next bet but probably only worth about 10 bhp.
You could get a lot more horses if you're willing to go turbo. There's a 156 ts here in SA running 352 hp (iirc). There's a video somewhere in the SA forum.
If you want massive improvements from these engines then it really requires massive sums of money in the form of induction kits, injectors, head work etc. and unless you are completely certain that you want to go down that pathway, its probably not worth it as it is a lengthy process and can very easily become a huge money pit with a lot of specialist work at specialist prices.
If you want some moderate gains for a more reasonable cost then the best place to start would probably be a remap paired with a better exhaust system as spankdanny said. The benefits in raw bhp will probably be maybe 10bhp but you can get a better torque curve for better power delivery which will give a notable improvement to daily driving. If all else fails, rip out the useless back seats and shed some weight if you're really desperate for a cheap performance increase :biglaugh:
Thank,s to all the correspondents, ;but won't upset my GTV TS with turbos, supercharges, chips, chemical additives for 10 /15 bhp gain. But will treat her to a FF stainless steal exhaust in the new year:thumbup:
