After owning about 30 FIATs and Alfa Romeos, including three 164s, three 166s, and three 916 Spiders, earlier this year I bought a Mercedes-Benz. I wanted something with a nice smooth ride, so I chose the CLS with air suspension and the economical 5.4L petrol V8.
Well, I'm hopefully about to buy a GTV this weekend (might start another thread about it), as the silver Mercedes feels ridiculous (it's five metres long) and isn't "me" at all. I like driving it, but I feel it puts ten years on my age when I get in, and everyone thinks it's more expensive than it actually is. This isn't a good thing...
I considered many 'out there' options including a Ferrari - doesn't everyone want to own a Ferrari one day? - but I decided that a GTV will be the right kind of car for me. And V6, like my last Spider.
The biggest concern for me is the manual gearchange and the clutch. That was terrible in the Giulietta QV and I was very keen to get rid of that stalling, baulking menace. Not since my Uno 60 had I needed to avoid second gear in the mornings, and then often not find first either when the lights went green.
I considered a GT (JTS Selespeed) but having had a 147GTA, those related cars all feel similar now and less 'bespoke' than the old GTV. I do miss the Selespeed of my GTA, though I don't miss the dodgy respray and the noisy gearbox (caused by welding distortion after the diff explosion before I bought it). The ride was irritating compared to the soothing Mercedes, but not much worse than the Giulietta and I remember my Spider being surprisingly soft, hence the choice of the GTV as being "a Spider without the wobbles".
But maybe I should keep looking for another Selespeed GTA - for practicality... That's what Alfa stands for - Always Looking For Another
