This is becoming a regular, especially the bit about the 'hole in the air intake'. I take it you found a split in the intake hose between the air cleaner and the throttle body. I certiainly noticed an increase in performance and smoothness with this done.
As for the disconnect MAF test, read up plenty round here because I seem to remember some saying that on earlier cars the thing would run BETTER if a dead MAF was disconnected, but on later cars the test wasn't useful.
I can easily see why this would be so. If you disconnect the MAF the ECU will refer to it's default charts, which are fine for driving and performance, but leave the emmissions slightly ragged. On the other hand if it's trying to interpret badly offset signals from a faulty MAF, it will start modifying the fuelling untill the engine can't burn it properly.
