2.0TS gearbox and/or clutch difficulties
2002 GTV 2.0TS, 141k miles. I've read all I can regarding gearbox problems but would appreciate any input before I take it all to bits.
It makes a loud whining/whiring noise that increases in pitch with engine rpm when the clutch is pressed. I guess it's release bearing. Clutch operation otherwise seems fine, bites smoothly and where I'd expect it to, pedal feels normal.
However in addition the 'box has poor synchro into 5th and on way down into 4th, and also reluctant to go quietly into reverse. Other gears feel absolutely fine i.e. light and smooth engagement up or down box.
I suspect that I'm probably needing to put a different box and a new clutch kit in, and that I won't know for sure until it's apart. However I just wonder if the loud clutch noise and gearchange issues are linked in some way? Or just coincidence.
Haven't had car that long, no mention of gearbox issues in history, no idea what state the box oil/swarf build up condition is like or if/when last clutch change occured. The box does not whine during use apart from when clutch is pressed as mentioned above
