I have found that all TS engines are flat under 3000rpm, but after that the power should build in a linear fashion to the red line.
If the variator is knackered you often get a kick at around 5000rpm.
This is because the failed variator makes the engine loose midrange torque, so when the engine does come "On cam" you notice the step more.
The biggest giveaway of a failed variator is rattles. Firstly at startup, then all of the time between around 2000 and 5000rpm which can be heard with the windows open.
