Ive found garages nowadays dont always do much in terms of troubleshooting (a local alfa dealership I was using a while back were basically woefull).. Ie they look at the symptoms and link this to the associated components and replaced all the associated components.
a good mechanic though with knowledge of the car will always been able to zoom further into the problem and diagnose better whats wrong.
In this case they have fixed the problem, but their lack of taking a little bit of time to diagnose exactly what was wrong has resulted in you paying a lot more money than you should have done potentially.
We have all been in the same boat over the years. The way to get out of that boat is to find a very good alfa garage that have a strong reputation for servicing and repair. (not always easy to find one local!)
