Hi there GTV gurus :-)
I have a dicky petrol gauge on my GTV V6 (p2 1999). The problem is intermittent but as time goes on it seems to be getting worse and now its more broken than working.
Quite simply the needle drops to zero and the yellow light comes on (not flashing), even though there is plenty of fuel in the tank. It seems to work when the tank is full or nearly full but goes dicky pretty soon after a re-fill.
Sometimes the needle rises and light goes off to show the correct reading but after a while it drops again, suggesting empty tank.
It was like this when I bought the car and I took it to my indie just after purchase to have it sorted. He changed the sensor in the tank and I went off believing all was well, only to see the problem come back (it worked more often in those days).
So I presume the problem is either in the wiring from sensor to gauge or there is a fault in the gauge itself. I'd like to have a go at this myself but I'm a bit of a beginner.
Any advice on how to approach the fix?
I presume there is a simple test to check the wiring: put a multi-meter on the wires at the meter gauge (?). what am I looking for? eg zero volts, open or closed circuit etc etc.
I've been advised by my garage that the next step is to change the gauge, but I can't help feeling this is over-kill. If it works sometimes then surely it is a faulty connection rather than a blown gauge.
Advice on the route of the wiring, how to get to it, how to get to the back of the gauge/centre console etc, would be most appreciated. Indeed and tips or advice would be welcome, before I get my hammer out
