I have a 2003 Spider, that's developed a couple of strange noises. The air con has a bearing sound when its on, is that a failed compressor or a pump (and is it worth sorting)? I also have a clunk noise on acceleration, just a single clunk noise, sounds like its coming from the rear, any ideas - I would really appreciate some advice thanks Antony
Easy enough to check the aircon compressor bearings.
Open the bonnet, the compressor is between the radiator and the engine on the right side of the car ( UK driver's side ).
Get a helper to start the engine and after a few seconds, if the aircon is on you'll hear the compressor engage. If it's isn't already on, get the helper to push the button. The compressor clutch engages with a loud 'crack' noise ( normal ). Experiment with the a/c on & off. You should then be able to determine whether it is the a/c compressor or not. If he noise goes away completely with a/c off, it may be the internal bearings, if the noise is always there ( but with reduced volume with a/c off ) it may be the pulley bearing.
You should have a 6 rib pulley on a 2003 so it shouldn't be too difficult to replace either used or recon.
