my girlfriend is wanting an alfa gtv, and we went to look at one earlier today. Having owned a 156 twinny for a while now, i know a little about the engines, but not gtv's especially...
anyway, went to see a car as advertised in autotrader, 96 plate, going for 2.4k (2.0 TS). fired it up - the worst sounding 'diesel' clatter ive ever heard on an alfa, so definately needing a new variator - aparently the cambelt was done 16K ago.... bodywork good, looked like it had had new bushes too from what i could tell on the back.
so, girlfriend took it for a spin - got back, dealer chappy comes out, 'what do you think?' i said , 'mmm, ok, needs a new variator for a start, and there seem to be bolts missing from the rocker cover' ... things then went a little strange, he looked at me, then my girlfriend and said to my girlfriend - 'is this for you?' upon saying yes he then said
' ah no, don't get an alfa, theyre not for you - don't mean to be sexist, but your not ready for one of these'
some alfa bashing followed on the part of the sales chap followed by 'so, if you leave a deposit now, you can pick it up next week!
absolutely gobsmacked by this attitude (as was the girlfriend!
1st question: 'alfas, just for the boys?
(asked in jest, of course!
2nd question: whats a reasonable price to pay for a good 96/97 plate alfa?
