Circlip missing on Inner Hub to gearbox?

Hello Folks
After Stuart Mansell's (Alfa Ragazzi - Umberleigh - N.Devon) excellent work on Katies engine, I was inspired to finally do the whole front suspension thing. Apart from having to practically shave off the drop links from the AR Bar...all went well.
The inner shaft on the passengers (Left or near side) came out from the gearbox WITH the hub and very little oil. This surprised me!
I have tried to find a picture or diagram to confirm that it should have a circlip (round wire type) on the end of that shaft,
Does anyone know If it is supposed to have one (The shaft can't actually come out once the rest of the suspension/shafts are back in place) but I can't believe it just floats in the gearbox housing?
I guess the easiest thing to do is pull the shaft out again (I will undo the Allen Bolts this time) and see if there is a recess for a clip.
Thanks for any help.
