Interim quick guide: Try and twist the ******* off with all your might. Some people are lucky and it comes off. Others like me had to take a hack saw to it.
EDIT: And in answer to your query on the other thread, the reverse select lift mechanism is separate. You have the metal gearstick shaft, and then there's a hard plastic sleeve that slots over it. The top of the sleeve has the ring bit that you lift with your fingers, and at the bottom of the sleeve is a simple protrusion that fouls against the box until you lift it. The whole thing is really simple and can be removed if you want. If you do keep it you need a knob that is compatible since the top of the sleeve slides into the knob when you lift it.
