Re: GTV key clearup
The transponder of each key has a unique code. The master key contains the electronic codes of all the keys in the set. The idea is that you take the master key with you to the dealers with a request to cancel the transponder code for a specific key, should such a key be lost/stolen to ensure future security.
You should also get the security code for emergency start-up procedures, for that occasion where the ECU does not recognise the security code of that specific transponder. Fortunately for me the transponders are quite reliable; as the previous owner of my car had the master key and the security code stolen. I know I am at risk, and give a sigh of relieve everytime my car starts. (I would appreciate it if anyone can let me know of a master code for the security code.) The dealers quote a price about 20% of the value of my vehicle for a new lockset, keys and ECU. They claim that the 5-digit security code is so secret, that even Italy is unable to supply that. (Ask me: Recently had my car immobilised for five days when the ECU played up. A total electric drain of the system, some waiting, and a miracle saw me back on the road.
