We did a bit of a road trip through Europe a couple of years ago in the GTV - 9 countries in 9 days and about 2000 miles! Also took in the Arese factory (though we couldn't get in) and Le Tour in Belgium on the way back.
I spent a fair amount on mine before - normal service stuff - all new fluids plus new discs and pads, some brake lines, cambelt, water pump, Quaife diff, few other bits. The Quaife was more peace of mind and slight paranoia. I would say check the cooling system if anything- going over some of the big passes and generally driving in the mountains (in summer) it did get quite hot. When i got back the rad failed shortly after - could have been related? So i'd say check all hoses, thermostat as well as the rad and oil cooler etc. I would also say don't do what i did and finish fettling a day before leaving - best to give it a bit of a shakedown after any work just to make sure no problems.
I found the GTV brilliant - the smooth roads helped and it was fairly economical. Great fun over the passes and through the tunnels with the Alfaholics/Autodelta exhaust and CDA - only saw a couple of others as well.
The only fly in the ointment - someone reversed into it in Chamonix and disappeared. We had European cover, reported it to local Police etc. Long story short, asked my insurers how much my insurance would go up if i claimed to be told it would increase regardless as i had said i'd been involved in an accident - so i claimed in the end. Also check European recovery cover...on a cycling trip in the Pyrenees a friend had to dump a Mitsu Gallant after the autobox went - no Euro cover and £1500 by AA to transport home - so we left it with a breakers. Expensive trip!
