shrill screaming from alternator / aircon?

dry squeak degenerated into severe dry shrill whine (sounds like a touring car inside!) - anyway, prior to stripping of knowing which is the source? - Same belt?

Aircon switch doesnt appear to engage clutch anymore (think I could detect it when i bought car (not that cooling ever worked) - alternator provides normal charge

If aircon, can a different belt be used to isolate compressor / cheapest solution?

Yes. You can get a shorter belt but you have to remove the pulley to the side of the compressor cos it will be in the way of the new belt run. I did it on mine. Completely removed compressor and bracket, rad and pipework. It never worked and don't need aircon on a spider anyway.
