Re: Variator affecting performance?

Guys, thanks for all the posts on this topic- i feel honoured to be in the presence of people with such knowledge about my car. I think that the conclusion i can draw is that it is worth getting the thing changed anyway, just for the quieter engine and even the chance of smoother performance. A couple of you spoke of the 'manual' for the GTV- where can i getr the Alfa one from?
And someone asked if mine was a plastic topped engine and yes, i beleive it is. Will that make a difference? Cheers

Re: Variator affecting performance?

Our 1.6l 147 felt a whole lot more 'lusty' after the vario transplant and I'm sure this had nothing to do with the psychology of getting rid of the noise since that stopped within a few seconds of firing up. If the timing difference is 25deg I'm not surprised it can be felt!! What surprises me is this crude switching at certain revs. I'd expect that to be easy to feel when driving. I'm still not sure if the things seize randomly (if so, why the terrible noise?) of if they stop responding to the pressure feed and stay in a particular position. Maybe there is more than one mode of failure, but most people report the same noise. I think I junked our old one so I can't judge if they're easy to replicate or modify. You'd at least need an accurate grinder.

Doesn't say that in the manual
