We sometimes start buying bits and fitting them on a trial-and-error basis without actually knowng they are dead. There is information on here that, with a 10 quid multi-meter, will substantially reduce the risk of buying replacements for bits that still work. I suspect that you'd find the temperature gauge telling porkies if the sender is faulty. Does it read 80-90deg when warm??
The temp sender is in the thermostat housing. Find the fat hose between the top of the radiator (right hand side as you look in) and the engine. Just below where it reaches the engine you should see the plug for the sender which, not much of the thing itself is visible on the outside.
