Squeek from rear suspension

Hi All,

I recently became a real petrolhead and bought an Alfa GTV 24v 3.0 - very happy with it so far apart from a really annoying squeek from the driver's side rear suspension.

I know that there can be real problems with the rear suspension on GTV's if the bushes wear through and the suspension arms start to eat the aluminium sub frame, but I have had the rear wheel off mine and cannot see any obviously knackered bushes.

Can anyone think of anything to try... I have a few questions:

1. Are there any hidden grease nipples on GTV's like my Daimler has?
2. What about upgrading to Polybushes? Any ideas about those?
3. Does any one know which bushes specifically to inspect that are the usual weak spots
4. How do you test the bushes apart from jamming in a crowbar and wiggling it about a bit to look for play?

Any help - as ever - is hugely appreciated.

Re: Squeek from rear suspension

There are no grease nipples as I know of, I've just upgraded some of my rear bushes to the polybushes ( powerflex bushes ) because they were worn and it failed its MOT. The powerflex bushes are much more harder wearing also.

I think there are about 14 rear bushes to check, 7 on each side - somebody will correct me if I'm wrong I hope. The best way to check to see if there is wear into the subframe is to get underneath the car - if possible put it on a ramp. I had a good look at mine whilst it was having its MOT being done - you can easily see which points get eaten away by worn bushes.

If your getting sqeeking the chances are it is the bushes that have worn. I wouldn't risk not having them checked out either by yourself or at the garage.

Let us know how you get on.

Hope this helps.

Re: Squeek from rear suspension

I replaced my rear bushes with powerflex (all14) two years ago. They now squeak - a liberal spray with liquid grease has sorted it temporarily but it will need doing on a regular basis.

If you have no knocking noises and your tyre wear is even I would suggest just doing the same for now.
