Crazed Engine Rattle

Hi everyone!

I have a '96 ph1 Spider with 2.0 TS cf1 engine. I started noticing this rattle coming from the engine. I can't figure out where exactly it's coming from - definitely driver's side. It's more audible when it's cold outside and tends to go away completely after a longer drive. I uploaded a video to youtube. Should I be worried?

Sounds like the Variator is at fault.

I would second the variator diagnosis.

Its quite a common fault and can sound like a diesel on start-up/when the engine is cold. Usually gets better/goes away once the engine gets up to temp though. As far as I know a worn variator isn't too much of an issue, just get it changed when you get the next cambelt service.
