The end of the road?
Hi all and happy new year to you.
Things seem to be far from happy where my GTV is concerned. Yesterday, I was using the car in the rain - had the lights on, the heated rear screen and the wipers, as well as the heater to clear the windscreen. All fine, as per usual, until I went to leave and drive home last night, whereupon I discovered that I had no lights, no dash lights, no wipers, no heater fan and no electric windows. The only things working were the brake lights and the indicators. I had to abandon the car at my parents house and make alternative arrangements to get home.
Went there this morning to check the fuses and the often mentioned heated rear screen fuse may have been the culprit. It had blown and melted, but changing it hasn't restored any of the other items. I pulled out and checked each fuse and all the others look fine. However, the ABS circuit has taken offence to this action and now that light is on, as well as the handbrake light. I am assuming that it was due to the fuse being disturbed. Could some wiring have burnt out somewhere in the fusebox?
Is there something that links all of these circuits that could have knocked them all out? I did a search and saw mention of the N17 relay, but don't know if that is the culprit. The car is now un-driveable in this state and this is probably the last straw as far as I am concerned. The last three years have cost me dearly to keep the car on the road and to get through the MoT, when I only use it once a week. As well as this latest problem, a wheel bearing needs doing again and the thermostat needs replacing. Coming straight off the back of the radiator and clutch being renewed last year. The headlining has collapsed too.
I can't help feeling that I am throwing good money after bad now and perhaps this is time to call it a day and let someone else either fix up the latest problems, or use to for parts. It is a 17 year old phase 1 Twinspark with 156 000 miles and in average condition. It has a nice, black Momo interior, stainless steel cat back exhaust and good tyres, as well as new brakes, radiator and clutch, so would be worth it to someone as a parts car. Gearbox and engine are fine too.
Your thoughts and opinions are welcome, but after looking at how cheap decent 147s and 156s are going for, it does raise the question as to whether I would be better off with a newer car with less age related and worn out problems. In good, working condition, it would probably only have fetched £400 - £600, I reckon. And any further money I spend now wouldn't be returned if I sell it, so am thinking that I just cut my losses and move on?
