Dead fuel pump, advice needed...not having a good few weeks!
The end of last month my car (GTV 2.0 JTS)was knocked into which i haven had sorted yet and now while going up a main motorway my car stuttered to a halt just as i was pulling onto the forecort to get some petrol as it was very low(i know, i know don't let it get that low but i try to put super unleaded in and sometimes its difficult to find while out and about)
As we pulled in to the station the car died on the fore court, my boy friend pushed it to the pump and we filled up but it would't restart. He assumed it might pull through if we bumped it but i still wouldn't so we pushed it to the side. He checked all the fuses and swapped the relays with the ac ones in case the fuel or ignition ones had died but it made no difference.
If u put it to ignition you can hear he fuel pump make a noise(although he thinks it is weak, explanation later) but when you turn the key it just cranks and cranks.
After some time examining we had to call the RAC out, the chap was nice but not much more clued up than my boy friend to be honest. They took the intake off and sprayed engine start into it then re-attached it. The car started and idles fine and i gave it a little rev and all seemed fine, the RAC chap was quite happy for us to drive off but my boy friend insisted we turn the ignition off then re start it to see if it was ok again but sure enough it cranked but wouldn't start. They did the same procedure again and it idles and rev'd but would't restart after being turned off. The RAC chap hooked up his computer to the car when it was running and it showed no faults but whether he has the correct equipment i don't know???
Anyway after more engine start it fired up ok and he said to try to drive home but don't stop, he said he would follow us for a bit but once under load on the slip road the car cut out again. Now we had to be towed home =(
My chap has done some investigation and there seem to be 2 fuel pumps one under the rear seats and one in the engine bay(a high pressure pump...not sure what that is really) He seems to think its more likely that its the pump under the seat that is weak and this is a straight forward swap. Any thought on these 2 pumps and advice the best place i can get one ordered at this holiday time.......i down hearted GTV owner,
NB, the only upside is the rear seats have to come out so this will help when it goes to the paint-less dent removal chap 3rd week in January for the damage to the rear 3/4.
